Nursery Technician
Department: Cultivation – Nursery
Reports To: Nursery Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Position Summary
The Nursery Technician is responsible for the daily care, propagation, and maintenance of cannabis plants within the nursery and vegetative production areas. This position plays a critical role in producing healthy, vigorous plants that meet company quality standards and production schedules. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, dependable, organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced commercial cultivation environment.
The Nursery Technician reports to the Nursery Manager and works closely with the cultivation team to ensure plant health, sanitation, and operational efficiency while maintaining compliance with company SOPs and Washington State regulations.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPropagation & Cloning
- Take high-quality vegetative cuttings from mother plants following established SOPs.
- Prepare, label, and organize clone trays accurately.
- Apply rooting hormone and propagation techniques to maximize rooting success.
- Monitor propagation environments and maintain optimal conditions for clone development.
- Transplant rooted clones into vegetative production systems.
- Maintain healthy mother plants through pruning, training, and scheduled maintenance.
Plant Care
- Water plants as required during propagation and vegetative growth.
- Monitor plant health and identify signs of nutrient deficiencies, pests, diseases, or environmental stress.
- Perform pruning, topping, deleafing, training, spacing, and other plant maintenance activities.
- Remove unhealthy or off-type plants as directed.
- Assist with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) scouting and treatment applications.
Nutrient & Irrigation Management
- Mix nutrient solutions according to established recipes and SOPs.
- Measure and record pH, EC, temperature, and other water quality parameters.
- Maintain irrigation reservoirs and equipment.
- Ensure proper sanitation of irrigation equipment and reservoirs.
Crop Movement
- Move plants between propagation, vegetative, and production areas.
- Transport plants safely while minimizing stress or damage.
- Assist with crop rotations and production scheduling.
- Lift, carry, and position plant material and cultivation equipment.
Cleaning & Sanitation
- Maintain strict cleanliness throughout the nursery and cultivation areas.
- Clean propagation equipment, workstations, trays, containers, reservoirs, and cultivation tools.
- Follow biosecurity protocols to minimize pest and disease transmission.
- Dispose of plant waste according to company procedures.
Recordkeeping & Reporting
- Accurately complete daily production records.
- Record propagation counts, transplant numbers, plant losses, environmental readings, nutrient measurements, and sanitation activities.
- Promptly report plant health concerns, equipment issues, or production deviations to supervisors.
- Utilize digital cultivation software, spreadsheets, and written logs as required.
General Operations
- Follow all company SOPs, safety policies, sanitation standards, and security procedures.
- Assist with inventory counts of nursery supplies and cultivation materials.
- Support other cultivation departments as business needs require.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and process optimization.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills for recordkeeping and data entry.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with hydroponic cultivation systems.
- Nursery or propagation experience.
- Familiarity with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.
- Knowledge of plant nutrition and irrigation management.
- Experience working in a regulated production environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, reach, and perform repetitive tasks throughout the workday.
- Ability to push and pull cultivation carts and equipment.
- Comfortable working in warm, humid cultivation environments.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Work Environment
- Indoor commercial cannabis cultivation facility.
- Fast-paced production environment with daily production goals.
- Exposure to water, fertilizers, cleaning agents, cultivation equipment, and plant material.
- Requires adherence to strict sanitation, biosecurity, and security protocols.
Employment Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check in accordance with applicable law and company policy.
- Must comply with all Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) regulations and company policies.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality regarding company operations, cultivation methods, genetics, and proprietary information.
- Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as production schedules require.
- Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
