Overview

We are looking for an experienced, highly motivated, and personable Tax Manager who is ready to take ownership of the tax function and play a key leadership role within our firm.

This is an opportunity for someone who does not wait to be told what needs to be done. The ideal candidate is a “take the bull by the horns” professional who can assess priorities, take initiative, create structure, and drive work forward. You will have the ability to establish your own priorities while also helping set priorities and expectations for the tax team.

The successful candidate will have strong technical expertise in both individual and business taxation, excellent organizational and workflow-management skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who enjoys working with people, develops strong client relationships, and brings a positive, professional presence to the workplace.

This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of client engagements, improve and create workflows, mentor staff, and help shape how our tax department operates.

Responsibilities

Take ownership of the tax function and proactively identify what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, and how to get it done efficiently.
Establish and manage priorities for your own workload while helping set priorities and deadlines for other members of the tax team.
Prepare and review individual, corporate, S-corporation, partnership, trust, estate, and nonprofit tax returns.
Review complex individual and business tax returns for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
Provide tax planning and advisory services to individuals and businesses, identifying opportunities to minimize tax liabilities and improve overall tax outcomes.
Research complex tax issues and provide practical, well-reasoned recommendations to clients and staff.
Manage multiple client engagements and ensure returns and other compliance work are completed accurately and on time.
Develop, implement, and maintain effective workflows and processes for tax preparation, review, planning, and filing.
Identify bottlenecks and process improvements and take the initiative to implement solutions.
Communicate directly with clients regarding tax matters, planning opportunities, questions, and regulatory changes.
Build and maintain strong, trusted client relationships through responsive and personable service.
Assist clients with federal, state, and local tax matters and respond to inquiries from taxing authorities.
Supervise, train, mentor, and develop tax staff while reviewing their work and providing constructive feedback.
Help establish team priorities, monitor progress, and hold team members accountable for meeting deadlines and quality standards.
Stay current on changes to federal, state, and local tax laws and communicate relevant changes to clients and staff.
Work collaboratively with other members of the firm to provide comprehensive service to clients.
Contribute ideas and leadership that improve the efficiency, quality, and overall client experience of the tax department.

Is comfortable making decisions and taking responsibility for those decisions.

Is highly organized and able to manage multiple clients and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Is personable, approachable, and professional, with excellent client-service and communication skills.
Enjoys working directly with clients and building long-term relationships.
Is a strong team player who is also comfortable working independently.
Takes initiative and looks for ways to improve processes rather than simply following existing procedures.
Has the confidence and leadership skills to mentor staff and help others succeed.
Is adaptable and able to remain calm, organized, and productive during busy periods.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
5+ years of professional tax preparation and tax planning experience.
Significant experience preparing and reviewing individual and business tax returns.
Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations.
Experience with complex tax issues and tax planning.
Prior experience supervising, mentoring, or reviewing the work of tax staff preferred.
Experience developing or managing workflows and processes preferred.
CPA license or CPA eligibility preferred.
Proficiency with professional tax preparation software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
