Full Job Description

Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego is seeking to hire an Instructor for our Real Options for Adults with Disabilities program (known as ROADs) at our Harper Clubhouse in Solana Beach. ROADS Program Instructors work directly with an assigned group of approximately four (4) members with developmental disabilities, acting as a positive adult role model, coach, and mentor. As a result, we're looking for people who have this background and these qualities:

High school diploma or GED equivalent is required. We prefer an individual with an Associates degree in Special Education or similar fields
At least 2 years' experience in developing and implementing enrichment programs OR working with people with learning disabilities (in any capacity)
Possess a California Driver's License and have an insurable, clean driving record
Physically active and engaged in community activities
Creative and resourceful in planning activities
Flexible, dependable, and safety-conscious
Respectful and supportive of individuals with diverse abilities
Organized and able to encourage member independence and social growth

Physically located at our Harper Clubhouse on Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach, the ROADs Program Instructor’s primary objective will be to plan and implement a variety of person-centered activities that align with the carefully-drafted Individual Service Plan (ISP) goals. Part of those activities will include driving the ROADs members out into the community for educational and social experiences.

Here are the details of the major responsibilities for the role of ROADs Program Instructor:

Working directly with an assigned group of approximately 4 members
Preparing a safe, engaging, and creative learning environment either in-person and/or virtually
Establishing a positive rapport with ROADs members and co-workers

A Program Instructor’s ability to establish authority through leadership, communication and most importantly patience, will be required to provide ROADs members with the stable and nurturing atmosphere that is necessary for success. The ROADs Program Instructor position is offered in collaboration with San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) and aligns with the SDRC calendar to provide support and social enrichment to members in the daily program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead a group of approximately four (4) members in-person in an instructional setting, maintaining high standards for behavior and safety.
Implement and facilitate access and engagement in virtual program activities that are safe, fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate and meet Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego (BGCNWSD) standards.
Serve as a positive adult role model for adults in the program through appropriate dress, speech, attitude, and courtesy.
Communicate in a professional manner with ROADs members, staff team, and supervisor on a regular basis regarding program activities.
Plan and implement activities that align with member’s program goals, enrichment, and physical activity utilizing curriculum and materials provided by the program.
Create an engaging environment that fosters a sense of belonging.
Support adults in making positive behavior choices and take disciplinary measures when appropriate that align with BGCNWSD policies and procedures.
Engage members by following, implementing, and assisting in creating lesson plans.
Ensure members’ safety by assisting in set up, break down, and ongoing maintenance of shared program spaces in an effort to keep the BGCNWSD or community site clean, safe, and orderly.
Promote positive interactions between staff team, volunteers, and members in accordance with established SDRC and BGCNWSD guidelines.
Maintain members’ safety by keeping comprehensive records of member attendance, communication, and all other BGCNWSD documentation as required.
Identify members’ needs and communicate to Program Director, parents, and volunteers as appropriate.
Participate in all required staff team meetings, trainings, and staff development activities.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

Implements the safety plan at the program site and during community-based activities.
As a mandated reporter in California, adhere to all BGCNWSD and state mandated reporter policies.
Attends weekly check-in meeting with Program Director
Responsible for immediately reporting and documenting any and all injuries, incidents, or concerning behaviors utilizing established BGCNWSD procedures for notification to Program Director, Vice President of Operations, and parents.
Arrives punctually in order to meet responsibilities in program start up and assignments. Maintains close communication with Program Director regarding planned or emergency absences for the same reason.
Daily clock in and out and accurately complete and submit timecards/payroll records, incident reports and all other BGCNWSD program-related records in accordance with established BGCNWSD policy.
Adhere to all organization and site policies and follow procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate sensitivity to others.
Ability to engage in physical activity with members without limitation.
Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with staff, public officials, private sector officials, parents, and community leaders.
Excellent communication skills – ability to communicate effectively, sensitively, and maintain positive interactions with members, families, SDRC member advocates, Program Director, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego staff and leadership
Strong computer skills, with the ability to track data, utilize technology for communication, and familiarity with Google Hangout, Zoom, Teams, and other approved methods of communication
Excellent organizational and management skills.
Physical ability to lead and supervise fitness activities, monitor behavior, oversee curriculum activities and perform housekeeping responsibilities.
Familiarity of Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego’s mission and philosophy.
