Lead site environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) strategy as a business-enabling function that protects employees, reduces company liability, and supports environmental stewardship, ensuring all aspects of EH&S are managed in compliance with applicable laws and in conformance with DRS EH&S Policy while building a proactive, metrics-driven safety program. This role develops a mature safety culture that supports production by reducing disruptions, rework, and risk-driven downtime, while building a workforce that trusts the system, and supports environmental, health, and safety activities across a multi-site business unit with facilities in San Diego, California, and Madison, Wisconsin.
This onsite role can be based out of either our San Diego, CA, or Madison, WI facility with 30% travel expected between both sites.
- Ensure that all aspects of site environmental, health and safety are managed in compliance with applicable laws and in conformance with the DRS EH&S Policy.
- Develop and implement a proactive safety program, complete with leading and lagging metrics that demonstrably reduce risk while enabling throughput and schedule performance.
- Experience supporting or executing regulated site safety programs such as PPE Safety Requirements, respiratory protection, hazard communication, chemical safety, hazardous waste management, radiation safety, lockout/tagout, contractor safety, ergonomics, hazardous waste, or related compliance programs is preferred.
- Execute and maintain safety initiatives, compliance activities, inspections, training support, corrective actions, green initiatives and associated program management tasks.
- Manage relationships and serve as the primary interface with all applicable government and regulatory agencies
Manage site performance and contract commitments to drive continuous improvement; Experience managing or supporting site compliance activities, permits, licenses, regulatory reporting, or audit readiness is preferred.
- Lead teams in risk assessments, hazard reviews, and corrective action development.
- Oversee and deliver all related EH&S development and training programs.
- Ensure that a proactive safety programs developed and implemented, complete with metrics
- Interface with and manage relationships with all applicable government and regulatory agencies
- Managing site performance and contract commitments to deliver continuous performance
- Lead teams in the risk assessment process
- Oversee and deliver all related EHS development and training programs
- Quantify and communicate the impact of safety investments on reduced injury costs, lower liability exposure, insurance/regulatory standing, and uptime.
- Maintain required procedures, plans, training materials and related documents to ensure audit readiness at any time.
- Provide EH&S audit services, project management, and training as required.
- Work closely with EH&S and functional partners across business units to align local execution with enterprise safety expectations and share best practices across sites.
- Additional responsibilities include providing EHS audit services, as well as project management and training as required.
- Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization.
- Leading the participation by business leaders in administering the day-to-day aspects of Environmental, Health and Safety management.
- Acting as an advocate for Green Initiatives within the organization.
- As requested, serving as the emergency coordinator for the site.
- Maintaining relationships with regulatory agencies having jurisdiction over the facility(ies).
Laser Safety
- Working knowledge of ANSI Z136.1 (Safe Use of Lasers) and applicable OSHA/state laser safety regulations.
- Experience establishing or administering a laser safety program in a manufacturing or R&D environment, including Class 4 laser systems.
- Ability to serve as, or provide qualified oversight of, a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) — including hazard evaluation, Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ) determination, control-measure selection, and controlled-area design.
- Competence in laser-specific controls: interlocks, protective eyewear selection (OD/wavelength matching), signage, beam management, and operator training/authorization.
- Familiarity with laser incident investigation and medical surveillance requirements.
- Formal LSO certification (e.g., BLS/LIA Certified Laser Safety Officer) preferred, or willingness to obtain within a defined period.
Semiconductor Safety
- Ability to develop and maintain working competency in the hazards relevant to a III-V semiconductor fab, including process gases, chemicals, and other high-consequence materials and processes, in partnership with site and corporate subject matter experts.
- Working familiarity with applicable standards and codes relevant to site operations, including NFPA 55, NFPA 318, and NFPA 70E, or a willingness and ability to develop competency in these areas.
- Working familiarity with hazardous waste management requirements, including support for Small Quantity Generator (SQG) and Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG) compliance and episodic generation events.
- Ability to become familiar with site safety systems and their compliance and response functions, including electrochemical and tape-based toxic gas monitoring systems, toxic gas scrubbers, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, water leak detectors, and building alarm/notification systems.
- Support corporate sustainment reporting, including California SB 253 GHG emissions compliance requirements.
- BS degree in Environmental Science or related field required with a minimum of 5 years of experience in EHS in a manufacturing environment, as well as a proven record of success developing, implementing and managing effective EH&S programs.
- Professional certification preferred, such as Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, or a similar credential
- Ability to develop working competency in site-specific hazards, systems, standards, and regulatory requirements, with support from local and corporate subject matter experts
- Demonstrated ability to position safety as a business enabler — with examples of programs that improved both safety outcomes and operational performance (throughput, schedule, cost, or quality)
- Management experience and superior teamwork skills are essential as is the ability to lead and build teams and to effectively identify and resolve conflicts
- Strong communication, organization and negotiation skills are mandatory
- Must have excellent computer skills
- Experience with OSHA, SESHA and annual compliance training strongly preferred.
- Experience in semiconductor, microelectronics, cleanroom, advanced manufacturing, laboratory, or similarly hazardous technical environments is preferred.
U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
The salary range for this position is $108,307/year - $178,111/year. This range reflects the good faith estimate of pay the employer is willing to offer at the time of posting. Several factors can influence the pay scale, including but not limited to: Federal contract labor categories and contract wage rates, collective bargaining agreements, geographic location, business considerations, scope, and responsibilities of the position, local or other applicable market conditions, and internal equity. Other factors include the candidate’s qualifications such as prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education/training, and certifications.
