Children's Services Assistant

Full-Time

About the Position

The Library is seeking an enthusiastic, service-oriented Children's Services Assistant to join our Children's Department. This position serves as a welcoming and visible presence in the Children's Room, assisting children, parents, caregivers, and other visitors while helping to support departmental services and programs.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with children and families, possesses excellent interpersonal skills, and demonstrates patience, professionalism, and sound judgment when interacting with the public. Experience working with children in educational, recreational, childcare, library, or similar environments is strongly preferred.

This is a noncompetitive Nassau County Civil Service position in the Library Aide title.

Responsibilities

Welcome and assist children, parents, and caregivers using the Children's Room.
Provide exceptional customer service in a busy public environment.
Help maintain a safe, orderly, and inviting Children's Room.
Assist librarians with preparation, setup, and operation of children's programs and activities.
Help prepare craft materials, displays, handouts, and other program-related supplies.
Register patrons for library programs and assist with attendance management.
Answer routine questions about library services, policies, procedures, and facilities.
Assist patrons with self-service technology, printing, and other basic services.
Support circulation and shelving activities as assigned.
Help maintain the appearance and organization of collections and public spaces.
Assist librarians with outreach activities, special events, and departmental projects.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience working with children and families strongly preferred.
Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Ability to interact effectively and professionally with people of all ages and backgrounds.
Ability to remain calm, flexible, and courteous in a busy public setting.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Basic computer proficiency.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Schedule

Full-time position (35 hours per week).
Regular schedule includes one evening per week.
Regular schedule includes one to two Saturdays per month.
Optional Sunday shifts may be available at double the employee's regular hourly rate.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $48,000-$58,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Paid vacation, sick leave, personal leave, and holidays.
Membership in the New York State and Local Retirement System (NYSLRS).
Eligibility to enroll in the New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP).
Additional benefits in accordance with library policy and applicable agreements.
