Senior Technical Field Trainer

Job Description

Summary/Overview

Responsible for designing, coordinating, delivering, and continuously improving technical training and qualification programs for field operators and related field-service personnel. This role translates operating procedures, equipment requirements, safety expectations, customer commitments, and lessons learned into practical training that team members can apply confidently in the field.

The position partners closely with Field Operations, EHS, Engineering, Operations leadership, and Human Resources to establish consistent qualification standards across sites; support safe and reliable operation and onboarding, skill progression, and ongoing development for field team members.

The Senior Specialist serves as a hands-on facilitator, program owner, and trusted field resource. The role combines field observation, needs assessment, instructional design, classroom and practical skills training, qualification assessment, documentation, and program measurement. The successful candidate is comfortable working in industrial and customer-site environments, traveling frequently, engaging team members at all levels, and balancing operational priorities with a high standard for safety, accuracy, and training quality.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Build and maintain role-based training and qualification pathways for field operators, lead operators, technicians, and other designated field personnel.
Assess technical, procedural, and performance gaps through field observation, interviews, operational data, incident and near-miss learnings, audits, customer feedback, and leader input.
Design and deliver practical learning experiences that include field/classroom instruction, virtual instruction, demonstrations, simulations, hands-on practice, shadowing, coaching, and on-the-job qualification.
Develop qualification standards, skill checklists, knowledge checks, practical assessments, refresher requirements, and requalification triggers.
Coordinate trainer-led and subject-matter-expert-led instruction while maintaining consistent content, evaluation standards, and records.
Observe team members performing work in the field and provide timely, constructive coaching focused on safe, accurate, and reliable execution.
Support progression from entry-level capability to independent operation and senior or lead-level responsibilities.
Mentor and prepare experienced operators and subject-matter experts to serve as qualified field trainers or assessors.
Develop training for relevant field systems and equipment, including pressure regulation, gas conditioning, compressors, telemetry or SCADA monitoring, preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, mobilization, demobilization, and emergency response.
Convert standard operating procedures, work instructions, manufacturer guidance, customer requirements, and technical updates into usable job aids and training materials.
Partner with Field Operations and Engineering to validate technical accuracy and ensure training reflects current equipment, procedures, and operating conditions.
Incorporate safe work practices, required controls, documentation expectations, escalation criteria, and operating limits into applicable training programs.
Support customer-site training, project handoffs, commissioning readiness, and operational start-up activities when requested.
Capture recurring questions, failure modes, workarounds, and lessons learned and use them to improve training content, procedures, and field readiness.
Own or coordinate field-team member onboarding from orientation through defined qualification milestones and early-tenure check-ins.
Create practical 30-, 60-, and 90-day development plans in partnership with field leaders and new hires.
Coordinate required training assignments and ensure team members understand the connection between training completion, demonstrated competence, and authorization to perform work independently.
Provide input to talent reviews, performance discussions, succession planning, and individual development plans for Field Operations roles.
Maintain accurate training, qualification, certification, and requalification records in the learning management system or other designated systems.
Establish dashboards and recurring reports covering training completion, qualification status, overdue requirements, assessment results, field observations, time to qualification, and program effectiveness.
Coordinate training calendars, instructor availability, equipment or site access, travel, materials, and other logistics required for successful delivery.
Audit training records and qualification documentation for completeness, consistency, and readiness for internal, customer, or regulatory review.
Evaluate training effectiveness through knowledge results, practical assessments, team member and leader feedback, field performance, quality indicators, incident trends, and customer outcomes.
Recommend program improvements based on data, field observations, changing equipment, operational needs, and stakeholder feedback.
Partner with EHS to incorporate applicable safety, regulatory, environmental, emergency-response, and compliance requirements into field training without duplicating EHS ownership.
Work with Operations leaders to prioritize training needs, schedule team members without disrupting critical coverage, and reinforce accountability for qualification and performance.
Build productive relationships with field team members, supervisors, customers, vendors, technical experts, and other stakeholders.
Communicate training status, risks, resource needs, and recommendations clearly to leadership.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Education, Industrial Technology, Operations, Engineering, Safety, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
Five or more years of experience in field training, technical training, industrial operations, field service, gas operations, equipment operations, maintenance, or a related environment.
Demonstrated experience developing and delivering hands-on technical training and assessing employee qualification or competency.
Experience working with operating procedures, job aids, skills matrices, qualification checklists, learning management systems, or training-record systems.
Ability to understand and communicate technical concepts related to industrial equipment, process systems, controls, telemetry, maintenance, or field-service operations.
Experience working in industrial, customer-site, construction, energy, transportation, or comparable field environments.
Strong facilitation, presentation, coaching, writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to build trust with field employees and leaders while maintaining consistent standards and appropriate training documentation.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify root causes and translate findings into practical improvements.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
Ability and willingness to travel frequently, including overnight travel, and to work at operating and customer sites.
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet applicable company and customer site-access requirements.

Preferred Education and Experience

Technical certificate, associate degree, or additional formal training in process operations, mechanical systems, electrical or instrumentation systems, controls, natural gas, CNG, or a related discipline.
Experience with pressure regulation, gas conditioning, compression, CNG, SCADA or telemetry, industrial maintenance, commissioning, emergency response, or comparable field operations.
Experience building qualification programs, train-the-trainer programs, skills matrices, or competency-based learning pathways.
Experience with LMS, skills-management, digital work-instruction, e-learning, or assessment platforms.
Certified Professional in Talent Development, ATD credential, SHRM certification, OSHA or equivalent safety training, operator qualification credential, or other relevant certification.
Experience supporting multi-site or customer-facing operations.

Work Environment

Combination of office, training-room, operating-site, customer-site, industrial, and outdoor work environments.
Exposure to weather, equipment noise, uneven surfaces, moving equipment, elevated temperatures, fuel or gas systems, and other conditions typical of field operations.
Frequent interaction with customers, contractors, field employees, supervisors, vendors, and operational personnel.
Must follow all applicable company, customer, site-access, PPE, and safety requirements

Physical Demands

Ability to travel frequently and access operating and customer sites.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb stairs or ladders, and work around operating equipment as required by the site and training activity.
