Full Job Description

Full-Time Special Education Educator for a Functional Skills Classroom supporting students with severe/profound disabilities.

Overview/Purpose

The Special Education Coordinator is to provide personalized support to students and teachers in order to

Develop and implement the Individualized Education Plan (IEP),
Increase the effectiveness of classroom academic and behavior strategies,
Support students in accessing the general education curriculum and meeting the goals set forth in the IEP, and
Ensure compliance with special education policies and procedures as outlined in the Utah State Special Education Rules and Ogden Preparatory Academy’s Special Education Policies and Procedures Manual

Functional Skills Special Educator Responsibilities
IEP and Student Support

Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and follow through with students, paraprofessionals, teachers, and parents.
Set up and coordinate IEP and other IDEA-related meetings.
Provide direct student services, meeting with students at least weekly to monitor progress and adjust services as needed.
Prepare progress reports and participate in disciplinary actions for students on caseload.
Participate in parent-teacher conferences alongside general educators.
Conduct regular communication and outreach with parents.

Program, Staff, and Paraprofessional Oversight

Oversee programs for assigned grades, including scheduling and coordinating paraprofessionals for student support and data collection.
Evaluate assigned paraprofessionals.
Provide targeted training for paraprofessionals and general education teachers on accommodations, data collection, and classroom integration.
Supervise extended school year services on a rotating basis.

Curriculum and Instruction

Develop materials for student support, data collection, and lesson planning for direct services.
Build, order, and support curriculum for functional skills/behavior rooms, as assigned.
Plan lessons, coordinate implementation, and grade assignments.
Provide adapted work to general educators and paraprofessionals.

Behavior and Social Skills Support

Create and implement behavior plans; maintain fidelity in behavior tracking and data collection.
Teach targeted social skills and support general education teachers with behavior strategies.
Oversee and provide targeted training for paraprofessionals working with students with significant cognitive or behavioral disabilities, including integration into general education settings.

Professional Development and Conferences

Attend necessary conferences, including the Special Education Law Conference and others as required.

Supplemental class instruction and support

(as assigned)

Work with the assigned teacher(s) to determine student needs;
Lesson planning;
Prepare curricular supports for general education settings, as needed;
Whole and small group instruction;
Classroom requirements as outlined by OPA Administration and the OPA Employee Handbook.

Co-taught Class Instruction and Support

(as assigned)

Work with the assigned teacher(s) to determine student needs;
Lesson planning in coordination with the general educator;
Prepare curricular supports for general education settings, as needed;
Whole and small group instruction;
Classroom requirements as outlined by OPA Administration and the OPA Employee Handbook.

Special Education Personnel Mentoring and Training

IEP development and implementation training, supervision, and review.
Progress reporting training and supervision.
Training and assistance for mentees in finding disability-specific resources.
Required paperwork and data collection training and supervision.
Any required OPA mentor/mentee program participation.

Student Special Education Testing

(as assigned)

Effective and ethical administration of the DLM, RISE, WJ-IV including the ECAD, Cognitive, Academic, and Tests of Oral Language.
Support student evaluations and data collection via:
observations,
outreach to parents to follow up on the return of rating scales, assessments, and other necessary paperwork.

Committee Assignments

Multi Disciplinary Team: behavior referrals and intervention support (as needed).
MTSS team (as needed).
CTT- attendance at one CTT meeting per month per grade level for assigned grades.
Special education steering committee (revision of policies and procedures, development of program improvement plan, file reviews, and other planning support as assigned).

Salary based on Certification, Education and Experience. Range listed is typical of newly hired educators.
