Automation Technician / Automation Engineer

Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Automation Technician / Automation Engineer to support, maintain, improve, and develop automated manufacturing equipment in our ISO 13485-certified medical device manufacturing facility. This position is responsible for ensuring equipment reliability, increasing production efficiency, minimizing downtime, and implementing automation solutions while maintaining compliance with FDA regulations, ISO 13485 requirements, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
The ideal candidate has strong troubleshooting skills, experience with industrial automation systems, and a passion for continuous improvement in a highly regulated manufacturing environment.
Essential Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain automated production equipment, PLC-controlled machinery, robotics, vision systems, and electrical controls.
- Design, build, and implement automation projects that improve manufacturing efficiency, quality, and throughput.
- Program and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, and industrial communication networks.
- Develop and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs for automation equipment.
- Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures and implement permanent corrective actions.
- Support equipment qualification activities including IQ, OQ, and PQ validation protocols.
- Assist in process validation and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, and Regulatory teams to support production goals.
- Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and automation documentation.
- Maintain equipment history records, calibration documentation, and maintenance logs.
- Ensure all modifications follow Engineering Change Control (ECO) procedures.
- Support installation, startup, commissioning, and validation of new manufacturing equipment.
- Participate in Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma improvement projects.
- Train production and maintenance personnel on equipment operation and troubleshooting.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR Part 820/QMSR, OSHA, and company quality procedures.
Qualifications
Required
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3+ years of experience maintaining or designing industrial automation systems.
- Experience programming and troubleshooting PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Omron, Mitsubishi, or similar).
- Experience with HMIs, servo systems, robotics, motion control, and industrial sensors.
- Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with preventive maintenance systems.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
Preferred
- Experience in medical device, pharmaceutical, or other regulated manufacturing environments.
- Working knowledge of ISO 13485 and FDA Quality System Regulations.
- Experience with machine vision systems.
- Experience with SQL, data collection systems, SCADA, or MES platforms.
- Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma experience.
- Understanding of validation documentation (IQ/OQ/PQ).
- Robotics programming experience.

Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, climb ladders, and work around manufacturing equipment.
- Ability to safely work around electrical and mechanical systems using appropriate PPE.
- Occasionally work outside normal business hours to support equipment installations or emergency repairs.
Compensation & Benefits
· Salary $75,000-$85,000 based on experience and education
