The Pharmacy Technician – Inpatient supports a busy 190-bed hospital with a 24-hour pharmacy operating at approximately 90–100% capacity. Caregivers rotate through a variety of pharmacy workflows, including sterile compounding in the IV room, medication preparation and delivery to patient care areas, and replenishment of automated dispensing cabinets. Depending on the assigned shift, technicians may also batch medications, prepare specialized mixtures, respond to missing medication requests, answer pharmacy calls, and use pneumatic tube systems to deliver medications throughout the hospital.
A caregiver in this position will work a day/evening rotation consisting of five 8-hour shifts per week, with shifts scheduled between 6:30am and 10:00pm. Caregivers will remain on the same shift for one week at a time and participate in an every other weekend rotation. Holiday coverage includes two holidays per year, one major and one minor. There are no on-call or float expectations. Overnight coverage may occasionally be required to provide PTO coverage for the night-shift team, but this is expected to be rare.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Prepare medications through selecting, labeling, repacking, non-sterile compounding, and sterile compounding.
- Deliver medications to the appropriate storage locations in an accurate and timely manner.
- Maintain accurate and appropriate inventory of medications and supplies and complete inventory audits, such as cycle counts and nursing unit inspections.
- Maintain a safe and clean work area by complying with procedures, rules and regulations, and document regulatory requirements such as temperature logs, scheduled activities, and training.
- Use information systems, technology, and automation to complete assigned tasks.
- Assist with the training of pharmacy caregivers and students.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Current licensure in Florida as a Registered Pharmacy Technician
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) within 18 months of hire
- Ability to perform algebraic calculations necessary for the preparation of extemporaneous compounds
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician Training Program
- Six months of hospital experience
- Inpatient experience, open to outpatient
Physical Requirements:
- Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing, walking, reaching, stretching and sitting for prolonged periods; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer, dispensing, and compounding.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
