The Role: Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, supporting compliance processes, and ensuring client accounts are organized and defensible. This role supports small business clients and works closely with the bookkeeping and tax team to maintain accuracy, consistency, and timely reporting.

This is a client-facing role. You will communicate with clients by phone, email, and in person to gather missing information, explain issues clearly, and keep work moving. We’re looking for someone who can take ownership quickly with minimal hand-holding, appreciates mentorship, professional growth, autonomy, critical (out of the box) thinker and helps keep work moving across multiple client deadlines.

Employment type: W-2, full-time
Hours: 9AM - 4 PM, 32-35 hours/week
Location: In-office at our “Tax Shack” office (Lacey, WA 98503)
Pay: $55,000 - $75,000/year depending on experience
Target start date: September 1st

Key Responsibilities

Prepare and review monthly financial statements for small business clients.
Perform bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations.
Manage month-end and year-end close (multiple clients, consistent deadlines).
Prepare and post adjusting journal entries.
Review bookkeeping work for accuracy and completeness and follow up on fixes.
Support compliance work, including B&O and sales tax filings and documentation.
Support payroll reporting and coordination (training available for the right person).
Assist with tax preparation documentation and reporting support.
Maintain organized, audit-ready client files with clean documentation.
Communicate professionally with clients about financial questions, missing items, and next steps.
Identify discrepancies or risks and escalate appropriately.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Required

3–5 years of accounting experience.
Strong GAAP-based accrual accounting fundamentals
Solid Foundational understanding of understanding Debits/Credits for journal entries
Experience preparing and reviewing financial statements.
Strong reconciliation skills and sharp attention to detail.
Proficient in QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online (required).
Experience supporting B&O and sales tax work (filings, documentation, or review).
Comfortable managing 8-20+ active client accounts (or equivalent workload) with recurring deadlines and frequent context switching
Confident in a client-facing environment (warm, steady, professional—especially on the phone).
High integrity and confidentiality with sensitive financial information.
Prior work in a client services environment (public accounting, CAS, or outsourced accounting) where you managed multiple clients and recurring deadlines.

Nice to Have

Payroll experience (or willingness to learn quickly with support).
Income tax exposure (helping pull documentation / support the return process).
