Full Job Description

Controller

Our client is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the organization's accounting and financial operations. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with grant and regulatory requirements, strengthening internal controls, and delivering timely financial reporting. Working closely with leadership, program staff, the Board of Directors, and the Finance Committee, the Controller plays a key role in supporting the organization's financial health and long-term success.

This opportunity is ideal for a hands-on accounting professional who enjoys improving processes while managing day-to-day financial operations in a nonprofit environment.

What You'll Do

Accounting & Financial Operations

Manage daily accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, journal entries, and account reconciliations
Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate financial reporting across funds, programs, and grants
Lead month-end and year-end close processes and reconcile balance sheet accounts

Financial Reporting & Budget Support

Prepare monthly financial statements and budget-to-actual reports
Analyze financial results and identify trends, variances, and potential risks
Develop financial reports for leadership, the Board, and Finance Committee
Support budgeting and forecasting in partnership with the fractional CFO

Grant & Compliance Management

Oversee grant accounting, expense tracking, and financial reporting
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and grant funding requirements
Collaborate with program staff to monitor grant budgets and reporting deadlines

Audit & Process Improvement

Coordinate annual audit and assist with Form 990 preparation and other required filings
Maintain strong internal controls and recommend process improvements that support organizational growth
Update accounting policies and financial procedures as needed

Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational needs.

What We're Looking For

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred)
Five or more years of accounting experience
Experience with nonprofit accounting, including month-end close and grant compliance
Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting
Experience using QuickBooks or similar accounting software
Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage priorities

Pay: From $100,000.00 per year

Work Location: In person
