Full Job Description

Summary:

The Diesel Mechanic Shop Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the mechanic shop while actively performing diesel mechanic duties. This role ensures fleet equipment is maintained safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements. The supervisor leads shop personnel, prioritizes repair work, coordinates preventative maintenance, and works alongside mechanics to ensure equipment uptime and operational readiness.

This position plays a key role in supporting safe operations, controlling maintenance costs, and maintaining a culture of accountability and teamwork.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Shop Leadership & Supervision

Supervise, train, and mentor diesel mechanics and shop personnel.
Assign and prioritize daily repair and maintenance work orders.
Ensure work is completed efficiently, safely, and to company standards.
Monitor technician productivity and provide coaching when needed.
Promote a strong culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork within the shop.
Coordinate with Dispatch, Fleet, and Operations regarding equipment availability and repair timelines.

Maintenance & Repair

Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of diesel trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment.
Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and engine issues.
Perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs.
Ensure repairs meet DOT, safety, and manufacturer standards.
Assist technicians with complex diagnostics and repairs when needed.

Fleet & Equipment Management

Maintain accurate maintenance records and work orders.
Track preventative maintenance schedules to minimize downtime.
Coordinate parts ordering and maintain appropriate shop inventory.
Monitor equipment condition and recommend repair vs. replacement decisions.
Ensure compliance with DOT inspections and regulatory requirements.

Safety & Compliance

Enforce all company safety policies and procedures.
Ensure shop is maintained in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
Conduct safety meetings and reinforce safe work practices.
Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED required.
Diesel mechanic experience required.
Previous leadership or shop supervisory experience preferred.
Experience working with heavy trucks, trailers, and construction equipment preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and air brake systems.
Familiarity with DOT regulations and preventative maintenance programs.
Ability to lead and motivate a team while working alongside them.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift to 100 lbs.
Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in shop conditions for extended periods.
Ability to work around heavy equipment, noise, and shop environments.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a shop environment and outdoors when necessary.
Exposure to grease, oil, diesel fuel, loud noise, and varying temperatures.
May require occasional overtime based on operational needs.
