Good Samaritan Pet Doctor is a high-volume surgery and dentistry practice dedicated to providing affordable, high-quality veterinary care. We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, and motivated Veterinary Assistant II to join our growing team.

This position plays a critical role in patient care, anesthesia monitoring, client communication, training team members, and maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient hospital environment. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a fast-paced setting, takes initiative, and is passionate about animal welfare and veterinary medicine.

Position Summary

The Veterinary Assistant II is responsible for the daily care of surgical and dentistry patients and assists veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians with pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative patient care. This role also supports hospital operations through instrument sterilization, sanitation, kennel care, client education, and training of team members.

Essential ResponsibilitiesPatient Care & Medical Support

Assist veterinarians and technicians with surgical, dental, and medical procedures.
Prepare patients for surgery and dentistry procedures.
Monitor recovering patients and report concerns promptly.
Monitor anesthesia and recognize abnormal patient conditions.
Provide safe and effective restraint for examinations and procedures.
Assist with emergency procedures, including CPR.
Prepare equipment and supplies for medical procedures.
Support patient intake and discharge processes.
Deliver post-operative instructions in a professional and compassionate manner.
Complete medical records, paperwork, and documentation accurately.

Client Communication & Education

Communicate professionally with clients in person and by phone.
Assist with surgical and dental recheck appointments.
Obtain patient histories as directed.
Educate clients on basic veterinary concepts, vaccine protocols, and anesthetic risks.
Reinforce treatment recommendations and discharge instructions provided by veterinarians.

Sterilization & Instrument Processing

Clean, inspect, package, wrap, and sterilize surgical instruments.
Operate ultrasonic cleaners and autoclaves.
Maintain sterilization logs and quality-control records.
Identify damaged or dull instruments and report concerns.
Maintain organized instrument storage and surgical packs.
Ensure surgical areas remain stocked with sterile instruments and supplies.

Hospital Sanitation & Facility Maintenance

Clean and disinfect surgery suites, treatment areas, recovery wards, kennels, and equipment.
Follow all infection-control and biosecurity protocols.
Properly dispose of medical waste.
Restock medical and cleaning supplies.
Maintain a clean and organized clinical environment throughout the day.

Laundry & Supply Management

Wash, dry, fold, and organize clinic laundry.
Monitor inventory of towels, blankets, drapes, and linens.
Ensure adequate supplies of clean linens are available for patient care.
Maintain cleanliness of laundry and utility areas.

Animal Husbandry & Kennel Care

Provide daily care for hospitalized and recovering patients.
Clean and maintain patient kennels.
Provide food, water, and bedding as directed.
Monitor patient comfort, cleanliness, and safety.
Observe and report behavioral or medical abnormalities.
Safely handle and care for a high volume of canine and feline patients.

Leadership & Training

Train veterinary assistants and new team members on patient care protocols.
Demonstrate and reinforce clinic standard operating procedures.
Mentor team members in animal handling, restraint, sanitation, and patient care.
Assist department leads with maintaining workflow and efficiency.

Qualifications Preferred

Previous experience in a veterinary clinic, animal hospital, kennel, shelter, or related animal care environment.
Experience with anesthesia monitoring is preferred.
Knowledge of veterinary terminology is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Ability to safely handle dogs and cats of varying sizes and temperaments.
Good vision, hearing, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.
Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Work Environment

This position is typically scheduled for four 10-hour shifts per week. Additional hours and schedule adjustments may be required based on patient care needs. Team members must be flexible, adaptable, and committed to providing exceptional patient care in a busy surgical and dental practice.
