Landscape Intern (Administrative Intern)

The Planning Department is seeking an intern to assist the Landscape Planning Division with basic landscape architectural tasks. As a Landscape Intern you will receive valuable hands on experience as well as an opportunity to make a positive impact on your community and your career. This position will interact with City Staff as well as local government, educational, and business leaders.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have the ability to perform basic landscape architectural tasks. Additionally the successful candidate will embody the Department's mission and vision as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the principles of the City's Customer Service Philosophy – Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving.
The Landscape Intern is a paid, part-time/temporary position scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans.

The Planning Department
The Planning Department is within the Community Development Agency, plays a critical role in achieving the City Council's goals and objectives relative to land use, urban design, and the quality and sustainability of the built environment. The department focuses on development that enhances economic value, quality of life, and complete community. The Planning department is comprised of three divisions: Administration; Land Development (includes Entitlements, Landscape and Airport Planning); and Advanced Planning (includes Historic Preservation, Healthy Ontario, and General Plan). The essential functions typically performed by the Landscape Intern include the following:

Assists members of the Landscape Planning Division by performing basic landscape architectural, administrative and technical assignments.

Operates personal computers, printers, and other office equipment.

Performs basic plan checking of landscape concept and construction plans.

Reviews grading and topographic plans for consistency with landscape plans.

Gathers data and logs information into spreadsheets.

Responds to requests for information and general questions from the public.

Prepares plans and files for storage.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education
Equivalent to the completion of two (2) years of college with major course work in Landscape Architecture or a closely related field.

Licenses
Valid Class C California driver’s license and acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment.
Desirable
Current enrollment in upper division courses or completion of a Bachelor's degree program in Landscape Architecture or a closely related field.
