Utilities Technician- Rotating Days 5:00am-5:30pm

Job Title: Utilities Technician
Location: US Beverage Packers West LLC
Reports To: Engineering & Technical Support Manager
Department: 650- Critical Utilities
FLSA Status: Hourly

Job Summary

The utilities Technician is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining all plant utility systems to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant facility operations. This includes boiler systems, reverse osmosis (RO) water systems, wastewater treatment, soft water systems, ammonia refrigeration systems, and supporting infrastructure.

This role ensures that all utility systems operate within required parameters to support production, maintain environmental compliance, and uphold safety standards. The Utilities Technician also conducts routine safety audits to ensure facility readiness and regulatory compliance. Also, support the maintenance and facilities team in repairs and preventative maintenance as needed.

Core Competencies & Responsibilities

1. Safety & Compliance

Follow all company safety policies, PPE requirements, environmental regulations, and facility operating procedures.
Operate utility systems in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and applicable state regulations.
Follow lockout/tagout procedures when servicing equipment.
Monitor ammonia systems and respond to alarms or abnormal conditions safely and appropriately.
Conduct routine audits of fire extinguishers and emergency lighting to ensure compliance and readiness.
Immediately report unsafe conditions, system failures, or compliance concerns.

2. Quality & Standards

Maintain proper operation of all utility systems to support production quality and consistency.
Monitor the boilers and water treatment systems including RO and soft water systems to ensure proper filtration and output.
Ensure waste water systems operate within regulatory discharge limits, including pH control.
Maintain accurate logs and documentation for all utility systems and inspections.

3. Productivity & Operational Excellence

Operate and monitor boilers, ammonia refrigeration systems, RO systems, soft water systems, and wastewater systems.
Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and system adjustments.
Monitor system performance and make operational adjustments to maintain efficiency.
Respond to system alarms, equipment failures, and operational issues in a timely manner.
Support maintenance teams with repairs and facility improvement projects throughout the plant.
Ensure continuous operation of utilities to support production with minimal downtime.

4. Communication & Teamwork

Communicate system status, operational concerns, and maintenance needs to leadership.
Coordinate with Maintenance, Production, Quality, and Facilities teams to support plant operations.
Provide timely updates regarding utility performance and system issues.
Maintain a professional, cooperative, and safety-focused work environment.

5. Technical / Job-Specific Skills

Knowledge of boiler operation and steam systems.
Experience with ammonia refrigeration systems and safety protocols.
Understanding of reverse osmosis (RO) and soft water treatment systems.
Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and pH control systems.
Ability to read gauges, meters, and control panels to monitor system performance.
Ability to maintain logs, inspection records, and compliance documentation.
Basic mechanical troubleshooting skills and ability to assist with repairs.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training preferred.
Experience: 4+ years of experience operating industrial boiler systems in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred.
Certifications: Boiler operator or knowledge in ammonia systems preferred.
Other Requirements: Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and ability to respond quickly to equipment issues.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

Standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50lbs.
Continuous exposure to high-speed machinery and conveyor systems.
Exposure to noise, moving machinery, and temperature variations.
Required use of PPE, including safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection.

Compensation & Benefits

Pay Range: $25.00–$33.00 per hour. Starting compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, skills, and business needs.
