Full Job Description

As a Fireline EMT, you will deploy to remote wildfire incidents, providing immediate medical care to firefighters, incident personnel, and the public in austere environments across Oregon. This role combines emergency medicine, wilderness EMS, and incident response operations, requiring exceptional clinical judgment, physical endurance, and the ability to operate independently with limited resources. Typical assignments last 14 days on-scene (excluding travel), with deployments extending up to 21 days as operational needs require.

Personnel should be prepared to work in remote locations with limited cellular service, live in tent camps, navigate rugged terrain, and support incident operations under physically and mentally demanding conditions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical & Patient Care

Provide immediate, high-quality emergency medical care to wildland firefighters, incident personnel, and the public.
Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including medical history, physical examinations, vital signs, and ongoing physiological monitoring.
Conduct rapid patient triage to prioritize treatment based on injury severity and medical condition.
Manage medical and traumatic emergencies using evidence-based prehospital care practices.
Perform airway management utilizing Basic Life Support (BLS) techniques and approved advanced airway interventions within certification scope.
Administer medications and treatments in accordance with local, state, federal, and agency medical protocols.
Stabilize and prepare patients for transport while coordinating evacuations to designated medical facilities or rendezvous points.
Operate emergency medical equipment including airway devices, monitors, oxygen delivery systems, AEDs, and other durable medical equipment (DME).
Maintain accurate, thorough, and legally compliant documentation of patient care, treatments, medication administration, and incident reports.

Incident Operations

Support medical operations within the Incident Command System (ICS) while coordinating with firefighters, incident management teams, aviation resources, and other emergency responders.
Safely navigate between Incident Command Posts (ICP), fire camps, staging areas, and active firelines using maps, GPS, and operational briefings.
Operate BK radios and other incident communication systems to maintain situational awareness and coordinate medical responses.
Assist with patient movement and transportation across rugged terrain using specialized rescue equipment when necessary.
Maintain operational readiness throughout extended deployments in austere environments.

Deployment & Physical Readiness

Maintain the physical and mental resilience required for 14- to 21-day assignments in remote locations.
Sleep in tents and independently manage personal camp equipment and field logistics.
Drive emergency response vehicles safely on unimproved roads and in challenging terrain.
Perform physically demanding tasks including prolonged standing, hiking, heavy lifting, carrying equipment, and patient movement.
Successfully pass and maintain the Wildland Fire Arduous Pack Test (3 miles with a 45-pound pack in under 45 minutes).

Required Qualifications

Current National Registry and/or State EMT Certification.
Current Wildland Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) Red Card.
Valid driver's license with the ability to safely operate emergency response vehicles in off-road and remote environments.
Ability to meet all physical demands associated with wildland fire deployments.
Strong communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills under stressful conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in EMS, prehospital medicine, emergency departments, urgent care, or critical care transport.
Prior wildland fire, disaster response, search and rescue, or incident response experience.
Wilderness EMS experience.
Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, trauma management, and emergency cardiovascular care.
Experience with airway management, trauma triage, medication administration, and patient transport.
Familiarity with air ambulance operations, Incident Command System (ICS), and wildfire incident operations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
Proficiency in emergency medicine, trauma care, and wilderness patient management.
Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-pressure environments.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills when working with multidisciplinary teams.
Strong navigation skills using maps, GPS, and terrain features.
High degree of self-sufficiency and adaptability in remote environments with limited amenities.
Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and patient care.
