Job Details:
The Director is responsible for development, implementation, coordination and assessment of security and security related interdisciplinary policy, operations, training and exercises, courier service, guest services, regulatory compliance, budget, and security technical systems management across a WMC subsidiary system comprising three hospitals, three assisted care and skilled nursing facilities, and affiliated medical practices. This position develops and maintains liaison with outside agencies to protect the organization and facilitate cooperation.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinates and directs employee security staff scheduling to ensure comprehensive security coverage across the system.
- Recruits, selects, orients, and trains security professionals.
- Directs design, implementation and maintenance of access control systems and protocols throughout the system, including credentialing.
- Directs design, implementation and maintenance of surveillance and other security technology systems throughout the system.
- Continuously develops strategic and tactical improvements through educational opportunities, personal networks, professional organizations, and liaisons with law enforcement and other agencies.
- Responsible for the gathering, analysis and reporting of key data, metrics and other relevant security indicators. maintains record keeping systems for security department.
- Continuously reviews and analyzes safety and security programs and makes proposals for necessary improvements and innovations.
- Monitors and conducts investigations including sensitive internal investigations, in conjunction with Legal, Human Resources, Risk Management, Quality Assurance, Clinical and Executive Management, in addition to external law enforcement or other agencies.
- Directs investigations in order to mitigate theft and provide loss prevention.
- Collates metric data to assess, analyze, and address potential loss trends.
- Provides development of and training in educational modules, including Preventing and Managing Crisis Situations, Workplace Violence, Code Response and other security related topics.
- Develops and promotes necessary changes in policies to conform to current best practices. Continuously monitors healthcare risks and trends in order to address policy.

- Participates in the Environment of Care Committee to report on and address issues of safety and security in a multi-disciplinary group to ensure compliance with CMS, NYS DOH, and Joint Commission standards.
- Participates in the Emergency Management Committee in order to ensure crisis management, business continuity, and recovery in the wake of emergency crises impacting the component institutions.
- Develops, conducts and documents joint exercises with law enforcement and other first responders to improve emergency response, particularly in such areas as active shooter and other workplace violence situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Meets system security department financial objectives by forecasting needs, preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, monitoring variances and initiating corrective actions.
- Works closely with Information Technology in order to ensure the integrity of the systems network and reliable operations of security technology systems.
- Provides necessary audits and reports on access to risk prone areas.
- On twenty-four-hour call for emergency situations.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Experience:
- 8 years of administrative or managerial experience where the primary function of the position was security operations, required
- At least 4 years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity, required
- 1 year of experience in a hospital setting, preferred
Education:
- Associate’s degree, required
Bachelor’s Degree, preferred
Licenses / Certifications:
Affiliation with International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security, certification preferred, (CHPA).
State of New York Unrestricted License to Carry Pistol Permit or
LEOSA H.R. 218/S1132 Annual Firearms Qualification, required
Other:
- Demonstrates long term experience in safety and security field for a public law enforcement agency or private security company
- Command or Executive experience in a public law enforcement agency or private security company
- Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare specific methods and techniques of safety and security, and the regulation rich healthcare environment
- Demonstrated expertise in principles, practices and techniques of institutional and building safety and security
