JOB SUMMARY:
Performs skilled work in the operation of light and heavy trucks and performs a variety of maintenance and construction duties, including installation of drains, water and sewer lines, repair of underground structures and pavement surfaces. Also performs snow and ice removal operations including plowing, snow removal and sanding. Assists in the operation of pumping stations and treatment plants. Designated Essential Personnel.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of a Crew Supervisor who assigns and reviews completed work.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
The employee is responsible for their own work but may provide occasional assistance to lower level or new employees.
MAJOR DUTIES:
1. Operates light and heavy trucks of all sizes for road maintenance and construction work; Operates truck mounted sand spreaders and similar attachments, snowplowing equipment, hydraulic lifts, common hand and power tools, and other equipment helpful to performing the below duties; Transports laborers, equipment, and materials.
2. Performs some basic maintenance and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment.
3. Performs highway construction and maintenance work; Maintains appropriate grade; Repairs and patches and pavement surfaces; Sets concrete and granite berms and bounds; Repairs and sets signs and barricades.
4. Assists in the installation of water services and mains; Lays, connects, and repairs sewer drainage pipes; Rods, cleans, and patches sewer lines; Cleans catch basins and manholes.
5. Performs miscellaneous painting, seeding and loaming. May be assigned to operate the recycling equipment on temporary a basis.
6. Performs snow and ice operations, including plowing, snow removal, and sanding.
7. Performs other duties as assigned or required. Designated Essential Personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or High School Equivalency PLUS one (1) to three (3) years of experience performing related work; OR any combination of education/specialized training and experience which demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the duties of the position.
- Valid Massachusetts driver’s license
- Valid CDL with endorsements for air brakes and tanker
- Familiarity with equipment, methods, and procedures used in highway construction and maintenance, and/or water maintenance and distribution
- Familiarity with the tools, materials, and methods used in street and utility maintenance and construction
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods
- Knowledge of safety protocols applicable to construction and maintenance work
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public
- Strong communication skills and ability to interact effectively with the public
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment physical and drug test
- Ability to successfully pass a CORI background and driver's license check.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Motorized vehicles and equipment, light and heavy trucks, hydraulic lifts, common hand and power tools, snow plow and removal equipment, mobile or portable radio. May operate chain saw, brush saw, compressor, cutting torch, tamper, jackhammer, rototiller, and line painting equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to hear and talk.
The employee must constantly lift and/or move up to 65 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
