Position Overview
The Director of Tax Preparation is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the full operations of the Tax Preparation department. This position manages Tax Preparers, the Tax Prep Fulfillment Team, Team Leads, and Reviewers, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely tax filings while driving efficiency, quality, and exceptional client service.
This role is ideal for an experienced tax professional who enjoys leading teams, optimizing processes, and partnering with leadership to scale operations during peak tax seasons and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
Department Leadership & Team Development
Lead, mentor, and manage Tax Preparers, Tax Prep Fulfillment Team members, Team Leads, and Reviewers.
Foster a high-performing, accountable, and collaborative team culture.
Conduct regular team meetings, performance reviews, coaching sessions, and ongoing training.
Ensure workloads are distributed evenly and deadlines are consistently met.
Maintain compliance with IRS regulations, company policies, and industry best practices.
Tax Operations & Workflow Management
- Oversee end-to-end tax preparation workflows, including tax planning, entity creation, compliance, bookkeeping, and filing.Monitor tax case pipelines and statuses to ensure files move efficiently and issues are addressed promptly.Ensure all current-year and prior-year returns are completed and filed ahead of deadlines.
Audit, Quality Control & Review
- Software & Filing OwnershipTake ownership of tax preparation software systems, extensions, and filing processes.
- Ensure all filings, extensions, and submissions are processed accurately and on time.
- Process Improvement & Strategic Planning
- Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and improve operational efficiency.Develop and implement strategies to meet federal and state tax deadlines.Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the department.
Client Relations & Escalation Management
- Serve as a point of contact for escalated client issues related to tax preparation.
- Maintain strong client relationships by ensuring concerns are resolved professionally and effectively.
Performance Metrics & Reporting
Establish, track, and achieve departmental KPIs and performance metrics.
Provide reporting, insights, and recommendations to leadership.
Special Projects & Cross-Department Collaboration
Support special tax projects as assigned by senior leadership.
Collaborate with the Director of Client Services and other departments to align training, processes, and client experience initiatives.
Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the Director of Servicing and works closely with executive leadership.
Qualifications
5+ years of tax preparation experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
CPA or EA required
Extensive experience with individual, corporate, and partnership tax returns
Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax compliance and reporting requirements
Proven leadership experience managing teams and high-volume workloads
Ability to speak confidently with clients regarding tax planning strategies
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Proficiency in tax software, technology, and process optimization
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Customer-focused mindset with strong interpersonal skills
