Full Job Description

Research & Development Supervisor

Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm,

Full-time Exempt $80,000 - $100,000/yr, DOE.

On-Site, in office

Summary:

The Research and Development (R&D) Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the

research and development of new food products and improvements to existing products

within the department. This role includes supervising the R&D team, conducting market

research, collecting data and ensuring that all product development processes comply

with industry standards and company objectives. The R&D Supervisor coordinates with

other departments and suppliers to optimize product formulations and production

processes, ensuring the successful commercialization of products. The Supervisor is

responsible for supporting internal and external audits and ensure compliance with

requirements.

Our basic Requirements:

Please have a strong passion for food, restaurants and the food industry. Culinary background desirable.
5 + years of experience in food product development, or 8 + years of experience in quality assurance or related roles in the food industry.
Strong leadership and project management skills, with experience in team supervisor and development.
Able to speak, read and write English very well.
Able to perform sensory evaluation and consume products that contain meat, poultry, fish, and all major allergens and protein sources (dairy, soy, wheat, corn, peanuts) Able to read and understand government regulations regarding our product/industry.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to interact atall organizational levels and externally.
Solid knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Significant experience in food science, quality assurance or other related work.
Candidates who are accustomed to the Japanese language environment or whounderstand Japanese are desirable.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in food science or a relevant field.

Other things that you will be doing:

Team Leadership:

Supervise, mentor, and develop the R&D team, providing guidance on projects, training, and development opportunities.
Manage workload distribution, ensuring timely completion of tasks and projects.
Serve as the main point of contact for the R&D team, regarding the SQFcertification.
Support to accept trainees and provide appropriate guidance.

Product Development:

Lead the development of new products and the reformulation of existing products to meet market demands and company objectives.
Ensure accurate development of new product specifications, working closely withplant staff to oversee the first production run and making improvements whennecessary.
Oversee the creation and maintenance of written specifications for new formulas,ingredients, and materials.
Supervise stability, safety, and shelf-life testing processes to ensure product quality and compliance with safety standards. Market Research:
Conduct and supervise market research to identify emerging trends, competitive products, and customer needs, and present findings in regular reports.
Attend food shows and exhibitions, gathering market insights and translating them into actionable product development strategies.

Cost Management:

Research and implement cost control measures in product development and ingredient sourcing, while maintaining quality standards. Build and maintain relationships with suppliers to secure the best pricing and ensure high-quality ingredients and materials.

Compliance and Labeling:

Ensure that all new and existing products comply with labeling regulations, including overseeing labeling design and verification.
Stay updated on food regulations and communicate necessary changes to the R&D team and other relevant departments.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

Collaborate with Production, QC, PI, Sales, Marketing, and Purchasing teams to ensure seamless product development from concept to production.
Coordinate special projects and reach out to other departments to support ongoing R&D initiatives.

Additional Responsibilities:

Supporting internal and external audits and ensuring compliance with requirements.
Oversee ingredient and material inventory management, ensuring appropriate ordering and storage.
Assist in laboratory-scale product testing, including the preparation of soups and noodles, as needed.
Manage and maintain labeling software, ensuring timely updates and database organization.

Supervision Exercised:

Directly supervise the R&D staff, providing guidance,

performance feedback, and support. May act as the team

lead for the department and manage cross-functional

project teams. Oversee and direct the work of other team

members during testing, production, and project

implementation.
