About the role

Senior Tax Reviewer

Excel Tax Group Aliso Viejo, CA (Hybrid — flexible for the right candidate) Full-Time, Year-Round

Compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications

You’re the person who catches what everyone else misses — the missed carryover, the wrong basis, the election nobody made. If detailed review work is your superpower and you’d rather perfect returns than manage office politics, this seat was built for you. Heavy review, light admin, real technical work.

Excel Tax Group is a growing, technology-forward tax and advisory firm headquartered in Aliso Viejo, CA (Orange County). We serve individuals, C corporations, S corporations, partnerships, trusts, and nonprofits across California and beyond — and we go far past compliance: tax planning, entity optimization, real estate strategy (1031s, cost segregation, short-term rentals), and year-round advisory.

We run on a modern stack (TaxDome practice management, ProConnect, and AI-assisted workflows that eliminate the gruntwork) and a POD team structure so no one works in a silo. Full-time, year-round work — not a seasonal grind.

What You’ll Do

 Review individual, C corporation, S corporation, partnership, and trust returns prepared by staff — accuracy, completeness, and missed-opportunity screening

 Tie returns to source documents, prior-year carryovers, and organizers; write clear, teachable review notes

 Serve as the technical backstop for preparers — answer questions, resolve gray areas, document positions

 Review tax planning workbooks and projections before they go to clients

 Work alongside AI-assisted first-pass review tools — you make the judgment calls, the software does the tedium

 Flag basis, at-risk, passive activity, and multi-state issues before they become amended returns

What We’re Looking For

 4+ years of public accounting tax experience with substantial preparation depth across 1040 / 1120 /1120-S / 1065 / 1041

 Detail obsession — you find the error on page 43 and can explain why it matters

 Solid grasp of California conformity and nonconformity issues

 Able to give direct, constructive feedback that makes preparers better

Nice to Have

 CPA or EA preferred (not required — skills win)

 Review experience at a firm using structured review checklists or tickmark workpapers

 Experience with equity compensation (RSU/ISO/ESPP), rentals, and real estate professionals
