Kitchen Manager – Museum Café

Reports To: Café General Manager
Position Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Kitchen Manager to oversee the culinary operations of our 30-50 seat café located inside a museum. Our café focuses on scratch-made dishes, supported by our larger commissary kitchen. This is an ideal role for a skilled, organized, and adaptable professional who thrives in a collaborative team environment and enjoys balancing daytime café service, external catering, and after-hours events.

Key Responsibilities:

Café Operations

Oversee all kitchen operations for lunch service (6 days a week) and Tuesday dinner service.
Ensure menu consistency, quality, and efficiency while maintaining café standards.
Manage prep and execution of menu items, using commissary support for selected components while prioritizing in-house scratch-made preparations.
Collaborate with the Café General Manager to create schedules that align with budgeted labor targets.
Maintain compliance with food safety and sanitation practices in accordance with health regulations.
Monitor inventory levels, order supplies as needed, and minimize food waste.
Lead and participate in all aspects of food production, including prep, cooking, plating, and cleaning – note: no staffed dishwasher, all team members contribute to cleaning duties.

Catering & Delivery Operations

Manage external lunch catering orders from platforms such as EZ Cater, word-of-mouth referrals, and other sources.
Oversee timely and high-quality preparation of delivery orders while balancing in-house service responsibilities.
Ensure accurate packaging, labeling, and presentation for all catering orders.
Collaborate with the Café General Manager to adjust catering menus and logistics as needed.

Event Catering & After-Hours Operations

Lead after-hours events hosted in the café, managing food preparation and execution.
Coordinate event menus and logistics with the Café General Manager and clients.
Ensure events run smoothly, maintaining consistent quality and presentation standards.

Team Leadership & Coordination

Supervise and support a small kitchen team of 2-3 members.
Foster a positive, collaborative kitchen culture and ensure smooth daily operations.
Train and mentor team members on best practices for efficiency, safety, and quality.

Qualifications & Skills

Previous experience in kitchen management or as a lead cook in a café, restaurant, or catering environment.
Strong knowledge of scratch cooking techniques, food safety, and health regulations.
Proven ability to manage a small team and excel in a fast-paced, hands-on role.
Experience with external catering operations (e.g., EZ Cater, corporate lunches) is a plus.
Ability to balance multiple priorities, including café service, catering, and events.
ServSafe Certification (or willingness to obtain).
Flexibility and adaptability to changing demands and volume while maintaining consistency.

Schedule & Expectations

Full-Time Position: Daytime café hours and occasional evenings for events.
Flexibility is required for special events and peak business periods.
A hands-on role encompassing a mix of cooking, leadership, and operational oversight.
