Nursery Production Assistant
About Marbott's Greenhouse & NurseryMarbott's has been part of Portland's gardening community for more than 90 years, serving generations of gardeners with plants grown and selected for this region. Under new ownership, we're refreshing the property and expanding our plant offerings. It’s an exciting time to be a part of Marbotts!
We grow much of what we sell on site, including seasonal annuals, vegetable starts, hanging baskets, perennials, and houseplants, with a growing emphasis on native plants. This gives our staff the chance to be hands-on with plants throughout the growing process, not just on the retail side.
Our team is known for being approachable, knowledgeable, and generous with their time. We're a working nursery where customers can expect thoughtful selection, practical advice, and a welcoming place to return to throughout the year.
The Role
We’re looking for a Growers Assistant to join our team for the upcoming growing season. Day-to-day, this role centers on watering, moving and organizing plants, maintaining plant health, supporting deliveries, and keeping the nursery well-stocked and running smoothly. Beyond the core tasks, you’ll be working alongside our growing team throughout the season—which means real exposure to the full growing process. For someone who wants to build their plant knowledge in a working nursery environment, that hands-on learning is one of the biggest draws of this position.
This is a full-time position running at least through May, with the potential to transition into a more developed role depending on fit and our ongoing needs.
What You'll Do
Growing & Plant Care
- Water plants according to established schedules and needs
- Clean and maintain plants by removing spent blooms, damaged leaves, and debris
- Monitor plants for signs of pests or disease and report concerns to growers
- Move, space, and restock plants throughout the nursery
General Operations
- Receive and unload plant and merchandise deliveries
- Help maintain plant display areas
- Assist with facility cleaning and general upkeep
Customer Interaction
- Greet customers and help them navigate the nursery
- Answer basic plant questions from customers when on the floor
A key part of this role is exposure to how a working nursery operates. You’ll be present for and participating in the growing cycle alongside our growers, with opportunities to learn seed sowing, propagation, pruning, fertilization, and pest management as the season progresses. We believe the best way to develop plant knowledge is to be in it every day, and this role puts you there.
What We're Looking For
- Genuine enthusiasm for plants and an eagerness to learn—this role offers real growing exposure, and candidates who are curious and motivated will get the most out of it
- Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to manage tasks without constant supervision
