Full Job Description

Zaugg Timber Solutions is a dynamic new Portland mass timber company with roots in Switzerland, where the Zaugg family business began in 1936. As the North American affiliate of a third-generation Swiss company with deep experience in prefabrication and mass timber, the company is building on a long tradition of craftsmanship while helping lead the next chapter of modular construction in the U.S.

Zaugg Timber Solutions is building its in-house architecture and engineering practice, and this is the first hire. We are looking for an Oregon-licensed architect to join as Design Associate and participate in the design of modular mass timber buildings across multifamily, single-family, industrial, and commercial projects. While these typologies are well known to the company and its principals through its work overseas, the designs have yet to be adapted for the US market. It is a rare chance to work in a company that values both people and craft.

What you’ll do

Study the existing company products in Europe and past and current prototyping in the PNW
Work closely with the design and engineering team overseas and in Portland
Help develop design documentation for modular mass timber buildings, from concept through construction.
Work across multifamily, single-family, industrial, and commercial projects.
Partner closely with the prefabrication and production teams to design for modular fabrication.
Help establish the standards, workflows, and processes of a new in-house architecture practice.
Serve as the first Oregon registered architect in the company.
Stamp and take professional responsibility for drawings in Oregon, and in other states as licensure allows.

What we’re looking for

Current Oregon architecture license required, with the ability to stamp drawings in Oregon.
Licensure in surrounding states (such as Washington and Montana) is a strong bonus.
Strong design judgment and experience across residential, commercial, and industrial building types.
Mass timber or modular experience is a bonus, not a prerequisite.
Able to read and produce plans, solve problems, and collaborate across a production-focused team.
Team-first attitude, dependable work habits, and an interest in helping build a company where craftsmanship and contribution are genuinely valued.

Salary range: $100,000-$140,000 per year.
