Full Job Description

Job Title: Performing Arts / Theater Teacher

Reports To: Head of School

FLSA Status: Non-exempt, Part-time (0.6 FTE), 10-month contract

POSITION SUMMARY

Park Academy seeks an experienced and student-centered performing arts teacher to build and maintain the Park Academy theater program through classroom instruction and performance opportunities. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and knowledge in a variety of dramatic techniques in teaching students in grades three through eight. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience teaching students with learning differences, including ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, and other language-based learning differences.

The Theater Teacher is responsible for creating and maintaining a classroom environment where students feel safe and engaged with curriculum through scaffolding and differentiated instruction. Theater classes meet 2-5 days per week, depending on grade level, and leads to a culminating performance each semester.

This is a part-time, 5-day-a-week position and will include additionally compensated after-school activities as well as the possibility of additional supervisory duties, additional rehearsals and evening events.

Park Academy features small class sizes, strong administrative support, and a school-wide commitment to intentional instruction informed by the Science of Reading. The ideal candidate brings both content expertise and a strengths-based perspective about how students with learning differences access and engage with learning.

QUALIFICATIONS

Professional Qualifications

Must possess a current Oregon Teaching License, out-of-state licensure considered.
Bachelor’s degree in education or a content-related field from an accredited four-year institution
Master’s degree in Teaching preferred
Experience with differentiating instruction and assessment
Experience using positive behavior supports
Understanding of dyslexia, dyscalculia, executive function, working memory, and processing speed and their impacts on learning

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Teach Theater classes and occasional elective classes
Design and implement developmentally appropriate instructional activities and lessons which lead to mastery of skills and standards, culminating in student performances.
Lead seasonal after-school Theater activities 2-3 days per week
Use multisensory approaches to appeal to a variety of learning needs
Collaborate frequently with staff, families, and administrative team to deliver personalized, differentiated program for students
Participate in the observation, evaluation, and problem-solving process for students who may need additional support

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

Attend a variety of meetings, including staff meetings, professional learning communities, and professional development opportunities
Attend occasional off-hour events, including, back-to-school nights, parent-teacher conferences, and school events
Maintain educational best practices, including appropriate lesson planning, student progress monitoring, family and peer communication, and report writing
Support a positive school culture
Support and implement school policy as related to both faculty and students in and out of the classroom
Participate in a reflective, individualized professional development program
Supervise breaks, lunches, and passing times as assigned
Collects, records, and maintains accurate student records
Maintains open and consistent communication with families about student progress
Stipend opportunities are available, such as after-school class facilitation, summer camp teaching, and special project management.
