JOB DESCRIPTION: RN 1st Shift, Monday-Friday, No Weekends or Holidays
POSITION TITLE: REGISTERED NURSE CIRCULATOR
DEPARTMENTS: Operating Room
REPORTS TO: Director of PERIOPERATIVE SERVICES
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provide quality nursing care during the patient's intra-operative period by identifying, planning, directing, executing and assessing the care given to the surgical patient. This responsibility includes communication with all staff members, management, physicians, anesthesia care providers, and the patient. It also includes the preparation, assembly and organization of the environment, equipment and supplies necessary to perform the surgical intervention. Provides pain management measures and ensures the safety of the patient. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate, initiate and implement patient care based on the assessment process, according to AORN Standards and Recommended Practices.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Provide individualized quality care to each patient, ensuring all patients’ safety and comfort.
- Collaborates with Anesthesia department to ensure quality patient care.
- Assumes the role of patient advocate, and interact as needed with medical staff and peers to benefit patient care.
- Demonstrates ability to perform all core competencies of the OR circulating nurse and all responsibilities directly related to intra-operative safety, to include but not limited to: surgical site verification, positioning, preps, surgical counts, integrity of the sterile field, proper nursing documentation, and accurate recording of specimens and implants.
- Demonstrates understanding and utilization of principles of asepsis.
- Performs continuous patient assessment during procedures, and communicates variances in status to appropriate members of the patient care team.
- Documents nursing actions, interventions, and patient responses to medical and nursing care.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the operation and use of decontamination and sterilization equipment.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the operation of mechanical, electrical and air powered equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions, and ensures proper functioning before use.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform in a professional manner during crisis and emergency situations.
- Continually increase knowledge of job and keep abreast of current nursing trends.
- Takes responsibility for professional competence and skills.
- Complies with all facility policies, procedures, practices, philosophy, and goals. Follows the appropriate chain of command when issues need to be addressed.
- Demonstrate ability to assist the anesthesiologist in the pain management environment, giving attention to sterile technique, availability of all anticipated supplies and equipment, and positioning and prepping for procedures.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills to obtain needed information relating to patient care.
- Demonstrate flexibility to meet the demands of varying situations, and assist in other areas of RASC as needed. Support teamwork within departments and between departments.
- Ensure that in every interaction, each person is treated with respect and courtesy, and that all communications are handled appropriately.
- Participates in maintaining a clean, well-stocked working environment, and assist other staff members in implementing cost containment measures.
- Participate in OR Department / Pain Management Department functions including, but not limited to, quality assurance and improvement projects, precepting new staff members, education to improve self and others, attending staff meetings and educational in-services as required.
- Maintain confidentiality of position acquired information.
POSITION EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
Current CPR required. ACLS required within the first year - cost covered by facility
Must have OR experience.
Demonstrate the ability to assess and re-evaluate patient’s health status, continuously refining plan of care.
Must possess the ability to uphold a helpful and positive regard for the patient and family.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in a well lit, well ventilated, temperature controlled environment. Possible daily exposure to medical waste, anesthetic gases, body fluids and blood borne pathogens.
Physical capability to safely execute all duties and responsibilities of the position, including but not limited to, the following:
- Assist with supporting, transferring and positioning of patients weighing up to 350 pounds, having the ability to push and maneuver patient-occupied wheelchairs and carts, assisting with surgical preps, and able to support and lift extremities of such patients
- Lifting and transporting of large bags, boxes and cartons of supplies, fluids and linen
- Ability to push, maneuver and position equipment, including but not limited to, video towers, radiology equipment (large and mini C-Arms), patient carts, OR tables, microscope, instrument trays, anesthesia machines, and other equipment used in the perioperative setting.
- Completing technical tasks requiring fine motor skills and precision of movements, including but not limited to, cleaning and/or assembly of instrumentation, medication preparation and/or administration, assisting with procedures and legibility of handwriting.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $87,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
