Full Job Description

Summary

Pathology Specialists, P.A. is looking for a Pathologists’ Assistant. The PA provides assistance and support to the attending pathologists, resident/fellows, and other hospital/lab staff. The PA’s primary duties center on the practice of pathology and involve assisting in the procurement and processing of surgical pathology specimens. PSPA is looking for an applicant who is motivated, detail-oriented, hardworking, and able to communicate with team members and health care professionals.

Pathologists’ Assistant Job Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the pathologist, the qualified individual works independently when performing professional duties associated with examination and/or preparation of the surgical pathology specimens
Triage specimen received from surgery; dictate gross findings on selected specimen using appropriate terminology; refer tissue sections for microscopic review by Pathologist or Resident
Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy, pathology, medical terminology and physiology sufficient to identify, dissect, and describe certain surgical specimens
Maintain and communicates the knowledge of both departmental and hospital policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of pathology services

• Accession specimens and enter data accurately, and to be competent in using the tissue processor

Maintain records of surgical pathology specimen dissections and dictation; assist in the compilation of reports for surgical pathology; label and store gross tissue specimen
Responsible for the organization of and efficiency of workflow processes in the frozen section and gross examination areas
Select and identify tissue for microscopic study; determine proper fixative solutions in which tissue will be maintained
Responsible for preparation of tissue for surgical specimen dissection, follow guidelines set for appropriate gross examination and submission for routine processing, and/or special procedures
Assist with teaching and orientation of Pathology residents to Surgical Pathology

Pathologists’ Assistant Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree (Master’s preferred) from an accredited American Association of Pathologists' Assistant program
Must have an active American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification
Minimum of five years’ experience in a high-volume laboratory setting as a Pathologist Assistant, knowledge of clinical laboratory processes and workflow, experience with laboratory information systems
Must meet qualifications for CLIA high complexity testing personnel

Job Type: Full Time

Schedule: Monday – Friday

Approximately 40 hours per week

Salary: $100k - $125k depending on experience
