Digital Marketing & Assistant to CEO
The Surface Shop | Full-Time | In-Person | [Location]
Reports directly to the Founder
The Role
The Surface Shop is seeking a highly resourceful Digital Marketing & Assistant to CEO to own our day-to-day digital marketing while working closely with our founder and CEO to drive marketing, sales, and strategic growth.
We are a natural stone company serving homeowners, architects, designers, builders, contractors, and dealers across the United States. Our website and visual content are central to how customers discover our products and engage with our brand.
We're seeking a competent hands-on marketing generalist with strong project management skills who can execute independently while also acting as an extension of the founder.
You'll have your own responsibilities—but you'll also help drive the founder's agenda, turning strategies and ideas into actionable projects and maintaining momentum across short-, medium-, and long-term initiatives.
What You'll Do
Digital Marketing & Growth
- Grow qualified website traffic, inbound leads, and conversions.
- Improve website content, product pages, landing pages, and overall performance.
- Coordinate SEO, link building, CRO, and other digital initiatives.
- Monitor performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Research competitors, markets, keywords, and new growth opportunities.
- Manage developers, designers, SEO specialists, and freelancers, including contractors sourced through Upwork.
You don't need to be an expert in every marketing discipline. You do need to understand digital marketing well enough to recognize good work, learn on the go to drive the project directly, and manage outsourced specialists when needed.
Content, Photography & Social Media
Natural stone is highly visual, making photography and content critical to our business.
You'll:
- Source completed-project photography from customers and industry partners.
- Organize and select imagery for web, social, and campaigns.
- Coordinate professional photography when appropriate.
- Create and manage content across Instagram, LinkedIn, Houzz, and other relevant platforms.
- Maintain a consistent, premium visual standard across the brand.
While professional photography experience isn't required, a strong visual eye is needed as you will eventually own website, social channels, etc (all our visual properties) with prospective clients.
Founder, Sales & Growth Support
A core part of the role is traditional assistant work to the founder. You will be helping manage and advance the founder's agenda across short-, medium-, and long-term initiatives. You'll take strategies, ideas, and opportunities and help turn them into structured projects with clear priorities, timelines, next steps, and accountability.
You will:
- Attend meetings with the founder, and translate follow up strategies into actionable projects that you manage.
- Maintain visibility into what is underway, what is next, and what requires the founder's attention across an ongoing range of projects.
- Coordinate internal team members, freelancers, vendors, and other stakeholders.
- Identify bottlenecks and proactively push projects forward.
- Research prospects, accounts, markets, competitors, and opportunities.
- Prepare for important sales and business-development meetings.
- Draft communications and organize follow-up.
- Ensure important initiatives do not disappear into Slack, email, or day-to-day demands.
Some assignments will be clearly defined. Others might begin with:
"We should be doing more business with architects in this market. Figure out how we'd approach it."
We want someone who can process the strategy behind an idea, help determine what needs to happen, build the plan, and then drive that plan forward through completion.
Demonstrated project management experience is highly valuable, but at minimum highly organized and detailed working styles will be required.
Who We're Looking For
The strongest candidate will be:
- High-agency: You don't wait for detailed instructions before taking action.
- A strong project manager: You can turn objectives into plans and manage them through completion.
- Resourceful: When you don't know something, you figure it out.
- Highly organized: You can maintain command of both immediate priorities and longer-term initiatives.
- Excellent at follow-through: Once you own something, others shouldn't need to chase you.
- Digitally fluent: Comfortable with websites, analytics, social media, Slack, spreadsheets, AI tools, and modern software.
- Visually sophisticated: You recognize strong photography, design, and presentation.
- Commercially minded: You connect activity to leads, customers, and revenue.
- Comfortable with ambiguity: You can create structure where none yet exists.
- Hands-on: You're comfortable moving between strategy, project management, and execution.
Relevant backgrounds include digital/growth marketing, e-commerce, project management, marketing operations, SEO, content, social media, business development, or founder/executive support.
Experience with interior design, architecture, building materials, luxury home products, construction, hospitality, or other visually driven brands is a major plus.
Why This Role Is Different
You'll operate at arm’s length with the founder, focusing on all aspects of the company's growth agenda.
One day might involve analyzing website performance, managing an SEO contractor, developing web and social content, attending key meetings about new markets or product development, and then preparing after-call projects to track and follow through on the remainder of the week. Ultimately, you will act as the right hand to the founder most responsible for marketing, sales strategy, and product development.
We're looking for someone who enjoys that breadth and wants ownership rather than a narrowly defined job description.
For a strong performer, there is significant room to grow from hands-on execution into broader ownership of our marketing and strategic growth initiatives.
How to Apply
Submit your resume and a brief note explaining why this role interests you and why you feel you’re a fit for it.
If available, include examples of marketing, websites, social media, photography, content, campaigns, or executive support projects you've personally contributed to.
