Osawatomie State Hospital is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) and Adair Acute Care (AAC). Adair Acute Care are a 60-bed facility, certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
All employees are expected to work in a harmonious and cooperative fashion with other staff to provide efficient and effective customer service: to use free time as available to assist other staff in the completion of work assignments and perform other tasks as needed; to contribute to a positive work environment through a positive, helpful, courteous demeanor towards staff, customers and the general public; and to adhere to appropriate standards of conduct regarding the use of leave, reports to work on time and in the designated fashion.
The purpose of the Nurse Manager organizes, directs, evaluates, and ensures the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centered nursing care. This position is responsible for overseeing daily operations of assigned nursing units, including staffing, patient care delivery, regulatory compliance, quality improvement initiatives, and employee performance management. The Nurse Manager ensures adequate staffing levels to meet patient acuity and operational needs while promoting a therapeutic environment that supports patient recovery and safety.
The essential functions of this position may require physical strength to frequently push, pull, twist, bend, squat, walk, stand for extended periods of time, lift and/or restrain residents with or without assistance and respond to aggressive resident behavior with specific, trained techniques. Be able to observe and respond to residents in distress.
Osawatomie State Hospital Adair Acute Care is funded in part by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is subject to requirements bestowed by Federal and State levels of government conditions of participation.
Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary: The Nurse Manager organizes, directs, evaluates, and ensures the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centered nursing care. This position is responsible for overseeing daily operations of assigned nursing units, including staffing, patient care delivery, regulatory compliance, quality improvement initiatives, and employee performance management. The Nurse Manager ensures adequate staffing levels to meet patient acuity and operational needs while promoting a therapeutic environment that supports patient recovery and safety.
This individual must possess strong leadership, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to effectively manage staff concerns, address operational challenges, and ensure the comfort, dignity, and well-being of patients. The Nurse Manager serves as a liaison between nursing staff, physicians, interdisciplinary treatment teams, hospital leadership, patients, and families to promote coordinated care and positive patient outcomes.
The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring organizational policies, procedures, and standards of practice are implemented consistently throughout the department and nursing staff maintain compliance with hospital, state, federal, and accreditation requirements. The position provides oversight of patient care practices, treatment planning, infection prevention activities, environmental safety standards, risk management initiatives, and performance improvement processes.
Additional responsibilities include recruitment, onboarding, orientation, staff development, competency validation, performance evaluations, corrective action, employee engagement, and succession planning. The Nurse Manager actively participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities, monitors key performance indicators, investigates incidents and patient concerns, and develops action plans to improve outcomes and operational effectiveness.
The Nurse Manager collaborates with nursing leadership and other departments to support organizational goals, manage resources effectively, implement evidence-based practices, and promote a culture of accountability, professionalism, safety, and continuous improvement. This position delegates authority as appropriate to subordinate supervisors and staff while maintaining overall accountability for unit operations, patient care outcomes, and staff performance.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Manages hospital wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients nursing care needs or needs of the patient populations receiving nursing care, treatment and services are assessed evaluated and met.

Policies and procedures developed need to recognize the scope and complexity of the nursing care, treatment, and service needs of the OSH patient.

Responsible for managing a system that assures nursing staff are appropriately licensed, receive appropriate ongoing training, and are assigned in adequate numbers to assure patient safety and effective assessment, care, treatment, and services.

Meets with the Director of Nursing regularly to discuss needs/problems and to receive guidance, support and counseling.

Makes rounds on the units, conferring with staff and patients for ongoing evaluation of patient care.

Participate actively and positively in the hospital risk management program to better assure patient safety and effective care, treatment, and services.

Implement an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess and improve the quality of nursing care, treatment and services delivered to patients.

Develop, implement, and manage policies and procedures that assure that all patient areas meet requirements for fire safety, infection control, and JCAHO requirements for EOC.

Manage directly or through subordinate Registered Nurses the assessment, triage and assignment of patients to appropriate care units.

Welcomes and educates newly assigned employees in order to familiarize the employee with specific treatment programs, roles and related tasks/responsibilities to the program.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Kansas or eligible to be licensed. Minimum of two (2) years of behavioral health nursing experience. Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory or leadership experience in a healthcare setting.
Licensing & Certification: Must maintain current CPI and BLS Certifications. Must possess a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications: Possess knowledge and skills associated with BSN degree in nursing or a related field or another appropriate degree or has written plan to obtain these qualifications.
