Full Job Description

Job Title: Museum Protection Supervisor

Department: Administration/Protection Services

Classification: Non-Exempt, Hourly; Full Time

Reports to: Assistant Manager of Visitor Experience

Supervises: Museum Protection Officers when acting as Floor Supervisor

Date: July 2026

Position Summary

The Museum Protection Supervisor is responsible for the physical security of the Museum in order to safeguard its works of art, both interior and exterior, its buildings, grounds, and parking areas, to ensure the safety and well-being of staff, visitors, and persons on Museum property. This individual will possess strong customer service skills to assist in creating a quality visitor experience and will have the ability to supervise co-workers, work with moderate supervision, and to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities in an effective manner.

Major Responsibilities

Protection of Artwork, Facilities, and Public

Conduct opening and closing procedures of Museum and Kemper East
Maintain working knowledge of Museum’s alarm systems and related emergency procedures at all locations
Committed to fulfilling responsibilities associated with after-hours events in addition to regular work schedule
Create written reports and notify their manager in the event of incidents or accidents related to public safety
Perform routine art counts and inspections at the beginning and end of day, reporting any damage or change in condition to their manager, facilities manager, and the registrar and/or chief curator, as appropriate
Shifts may include gallery or lobby spaces, loading dock/camera monitoring, exterior spaces, front desk coverage, and traveling between locations
Create written reports and notify their manager and the museum registrar in the event of any damage (or potential for damage) to artwork
Be alert to and report any change in facility function to their manager and/or the facilities manager
Be on alert for and report all safety hazards, or conditions that could result in unauthorized entry, injury, or loss, to their manager
Report to their manager any unusual or suspicious activity. Contact KCPD as directed, or in the absence of their manager
All other duties as assigned

Supervision

Serve as Floor Supervisor
Create and manage break schedules for all Museum Protection (“MP”) staff on the floor
Maintain awareness of anticipated tours and communicate this information to the other MP staff
Responsible for ensuring that floor security follow through on job responsibilities and Museum expectations
Report on MP staff job duty fulfillment to their manager
Report and act on visitor behavior/conflicts
Orchestrate event set-up
Have a working knowledge of AV equipment and facilitate the functioning of that equipment for events
Manage event contractors as necessary
Responsible for being a contact person for general contractors in the absence of/or in assistance to their manager or facilities manager
Allow access to secure locations for IT contractors, service vendors or staff; monitor people in secure locations
Assist in overseeing deliveries as necessary

Create a Quality Visitor Experience

Record daily attendance counts
Stay informed about Museum programs and exhibitions
Welcome and direct people as they enter the Museum
Maintain a clean and professional appearance, adhering to security dress code while on duty
Know other Museum staff and their roles

Perform Any and All Other Duties Assigned by Manager

Job Specifications

High School diploma or equivalent is required
Must be able to pass background check
Specialized training or study in Museum security practices preferred
Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to receive phone calls regarding Museum functions and emergencies during non-scheduled hours
Physical Requirements
Stand/Walk: The ability to remain on one's feet in an upright position at a workstation without moving about. The ability to move about on foot.

Handle/Feel: The ability to seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hand or hands. The ability to perceive attributes of objects and materials such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly fingertips.
Stoop: The ability to bend the body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist; requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
Reach with hands and arms: The ability to extend the hands and arms in any direction.
Lifts Weight and Exerts Force: Lifts weight up to 40 lbs or exerts force by lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing, slapping, striking, kicking, pulling, or jerking.
Vision: The ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more. The ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes remain fixed on a given point. Three-dimensional vision, the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships to see objects where and as they actually are. The ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This is required when doing close work at varying distances from the eye.
