Summary
Under the direction of the Nutrition Enrichment Coordinator, and in collaboration with onsite ASPIRE afterschool program staff, lead hands-on culinary and nutrition enrichment activities for elementary students at a partner school site. Pick up program ingredients from the Club, transport them to the school, and deliver engaging, age-appropriate cooking lessons that teach simple recipes, kitchen skills, and safe food handling, while supervising and supporting students throughout each session.
Representative Duties:
- Plan and lead hands-on culinary enrichment sessions for groups of approximately 10 to 20 elementary students, up to two times per day.
- Teach age-appropriate recipes and demonstrate the safe use of kitchen tools, utensils, and small appliances.
- Model and enforce safe food handling, sanitation, and personal hygiene practices always.
- Accommodate students' food allergies, dietary restrictions, and sensitivities; review allergen information before each session and prevent cross-contamination.
- Set up cooking stations and materials before each session, and lead full cleanup afterward, including washing, sanitizing, and proper storage of equipment and supplies.
- Pick up food, supplies, and any new small equipment from the Club and transport them safely to the school site on scheduled program days.
- Supervise and lead the group throughout each session, holding students accountable for participation and behavior with support from onsite ASPIRE staff, and helping provide a comfortable, safe, and stimulating environment that effectively meets their needs.
- Maintain ongoing communication with Boys & Girls Club and ASPIRE staff.
Knowledge & Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Basic cooking techniques, recipes, kitchen tools, and small appliances appropriate for use with children.
- Safe food handling, sanitation, and food storage practices.
- Common food allergens and the importance of preventing cross-contamination.
- Methods, practices and procedures used in maintaining an effective and cooperative After School Program of activities for children.
- Policies governing the conduct and safety of program participants.
- Principles of supervision.
- Basic first aid & CPR practices.
Abilities to:
- Lead a group of children with energy, patience, and a genuine passion for cooking and working with kids.
- Set clear expectations and hold students accountable while keeping the environment positive and supportive.
- Work independently without close supervision at an offsite location.
- Follow oral & written instructions, including recipes and safety procedures.
- Maintain an understanding of the needs and behavior of children of a variety of ages.
- Prepare and follow a program of daily, weekly, and special activities and projects.
- Gain the confidence of children of a variety of ages.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Administer basic first aid & CPR.
Education & Experience
Must be 18 years old. High School diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent. Valid California Driver’s License
Licenses & Other Requirements
Valid First-Aid Certificate and CPR issued by an authorized agency preferred and maintained on a as needed basis.
Working Conditions
Environment:
- Classroom and playground equipment.
Physical Demands:
- Sitting, standing or walking for extended periods of time supervising student activities.
- Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, to store supplies.
- Kneeling and crouching or bending at the waist to assist students.
- Participate in outside sport activities with children.
Hazards:
- Incumbents may have contact with blood or other body fluids from ill or injured children.

Work Location: In person
