ST. PAUL'S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF OXNARD

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRY

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Director of Music Ministry is responsible for planning, coordinating, and

directing the music for worship. The Director of Music Ministry recruits, rehearses, and directs choral groups

and other musical opportunities; and supervises paid and volunteer music staff. This position is supervised by

the Pastor and is held accountable by Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC).

SUPERVISOR: Pastor

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Collaborate with the Pastor to select hymns, songs, and special music appropriate to the season and biblical

text for each service.

2. Recruit and equip singers and instrumentalists (church members, community, and paid) to lead the worship.

3. Conduct weekly choral group practice and direct choral group, ensembles, and Sunday morning worship.

4. Collaborate with the Pastor to develop and supervise leaders of ensembles, bell choirs, youth and children's

music ministries, and Vacation Bible School.

5. During choir hiatus (July and August), arrange for music program for weekly services, recruit musicians and

arrange for leader to sing the hymns;

6. Coordinate and execute music for special occasions, including but not limited to, Ash Wednesday, Palm

Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost, World Communion Sunday, All Saints Sunday,

Sundays in Advent, and Christmas Eve.

7. Purchase music and music supplies, according to the approved music budget and donated funds.

8. Arrange for qualified substitutes during absences.

9. Work collaboratively with the Pastor and worship committee to create an outstanding worship experience.

10. Partner to create an environment of collaboration with the Pastor, committees, and volunteers with

collegiality, supportive cooperation, flexibility, sensitivity, and openness.

11. Lead all congregational singing, as appropriate.

SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS: This position may require the following supportive functions with the time

allocated for these functions to be determined by/with the Pastor.

1. Develop an annual music plan and provide periodic progress reports to administrative teams and staff.

2. Develop and monitor the music budget.

3. Plan and coordinate yearly music ministry retreat.

4. Provide individuals and music ensembles opportunities to grow in their musical ability, their faith, and as a

community.

5. Create a cohesive music ministry that promotes discipleship of all ages.

6. Attend monthly worship committee meetings, staff meetings, and any scheduled planning meetings.

7. Plan outreach worship services and musical ministries for all ages.

8. Coordinate with Tech Team on sound, video recording, and preservation.

QUALIFICATIONS: The Director of Music Ministry must possess the following qualifications:

1. Bachelor's Degree in music with course work in choral conducting or commensurate experience.

2. Proficiency and experience in directing choral groups, ensembles, and instrumentalists.

3. Two (2) years of experience in leading adult, youth and/or children's choirs.

4. Experience in worship leadership and planning.

5. A good working knowledge of church musical selections.

6. Ability to collaborate with staff, lay leadership, and church members.

7. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

8. A spirit of hospitality and other Christian attitudes at all times, including rehearsals and worship services.

9. A joyful spiritual attitude to singers and musicians, volunteers, and the worshipping congregation.

10. A commitment to the vision, mission, and leadership of the church.

11. Ability to pass a criminal background check and complete Safe Gatherings training.

12. Basic knowledge of United Methodist liturgy.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

1. Part-time, professional position for planning and coordination of worship services.

2. Compensation is $37.50 to $40.00 hourly ($29,250 to $31,200 yearly) for fifteen hours per week. The range

is based upon experience.

3. Two paid Sundays off, per year.

4. Required attendance in worship and rehearsals as collaboratively scheduled with the Pastor and other

musicians (lay and volunteer)

5. There will be a six-month provisional appointment for this position. The six-month provisional

appointment will determine further employment based on the Pastor and SPRC assessment.

SICK LEAVE:

1. St. Paul’s UMC provides sick leave for personal illness, injury, personal disability, and medical

appointments.

2. Employees receive 40 hours per year, starting at date of hire. Sick leave expires at the end of each twelve-

month period.

3. Sick leave cannot be used prior to the time it is credited at the start of each twelve-month period.

4. Call-in leave notification is to be made as soon as possible, but no later than thirty minutes before the

beginning of their workday.

5. Sick leave may be used on an hour-by-hour basis.

6. Sick leave may be used when the employee is required to provide care for children, parent, spouse or

registered domestic partner, grandparent, grandchild, sibling or a designated person which will be limited to

one per year.

7. Absent hours used from paid sick leave on Sundays are not negotiable or transferable.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

1. Lifting/carrying 25 pounds.

2. Standing for extended periods of time.

3. Sitting on a bench for at least one hour at a time.

4. Stepping up onto raised platforms such as pulpits, risers, and podiums.

5. Setting up musical instruments, sound system, etc..

6. Carrying chairs or music stands and other items as necessary.

Pay: $29,250.00 - $31,200.00 per year
