JOB OVERVIEW:
Paid Summer Internship (10 Weeks) — Malibu Community Connections & Outreach ~ Shemesh Farms (a program of Shalom Institute)
Location: Malibu, CA (in-person + some flexible outreach/admin hours)
Duration: 10 weeks (summer) Stipend: $2,000 total (paid internship funded by a grant from the City of Malibu)
Time Commitment: 10 hours/week ● 6 hours/week: on-site farm program support (Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10 AM -1 PM) ● 4 hours/week: Malibu community outreach + awareness-building
About Shemesh Farms: Shemesh Farms is a nonprofit social enterprise of Shalom Institute. We provide meaningful employment, programming, and community for adults with diverse abilities through sustainable farming, herb processing, and hands-on enrichment activities.
Internship Summary: This paid summer internship is for someone who wants to help make Shemesh Farms a household name in the Malibu community. You’ll support our farm-based program and also help deepen local connections—through community events, service projects, and relationship-building with Malibu organizations (including exploring joining the Chamber of Commerce and similar networks). This position is funded through a grant from the City of Malibu in order to integrate Shemesh Farms within the community and support our program. Eligibility (Required) Applicants must meet at least one of the following and provide documentation:
● Palibu-area resident (proof of residence required), OR
● Student attending school in the Palibu area (proof of student status required), OR
● Individual personally and/or professionally affected by Palibu fires in 2025 (brief written statement + supporting documentation as available)
Key Responsibilities:
A) Farm Program Support (6 hours/week) ● Assist staff during program hours with set-up, activity support, and clean-up ● Support participant activities (gardening, harvesting, organizing materials, simple hands-on projects) ● Help maintain a welcoming, safe, inclusive environment for adults with diverse abilities ● Support volunteers or visiting groups during program hours as needed
B) Malibu Community Outreach & Awareness (4 hours/week) ● Research and build a list of Malibu community touchpoints and opportunities, such as: ○ Malibu Chamber of Commerce and business/community groups ○ Community calendars, local events, farmers markets, school/community events ○ Service clubs and service-learning opportunities ○ Local businesses and gathering spots (coffee shops, boutiques, wellness studios, etc.) ● Help create and execute a simple outreach plan to increase awareness, such as: ○ Coordinating introductions and meetings (email/phone outreach support) ○ Identifying opportunities for Shemesh to participate (tabling, short presentations, volunteer days) ○ Connecting Shemesh to other community service projects and “days of service” ● Support “visibility tools” that make outreach easier: ○ One-page overview of Shemesh Farms ○ A simple “How to Get Involved” guide (volunteer, donate, shop, visit) ○ Drafting short blurbs for community calendars/newsletters ● Track connections made and outcomes (who we contacted, next steps, event leads) Ideal Candidate ● Friendly, confident communicator who enjoys meeting people and building relationships ● Organized and proactive; able to follow through consistently ● Comfortable representing a mission-driven organization professionally ● Basic computer skills (Google Docs/Sheets or similar) ● Interested in community engagement, nonprofit work, marketing/communications, or local leadership
