Job Summary

Position Summary

The Sabbath Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that every Sabbath morning at Church of the Advent Hope happens smoothly, on time, and in a way that makes members and first-time guests feel welcomed, oriented, and cared for. The Sabbath Coordinator is the on-the-ground leader of the church's weekly gathering experience — the person who is there, on site, making sure that what needs to happen does happen.

This is a Sabbath-only role. The Sabbath Coordinator works a 6-hour shift each Sabbath (Saturday), 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with the possibility of an extended 8-hour shift (8:00 AM to 4:00 PM) on particular Sabbaths — meal Sabbaths, baptism Sabbaths, special events, or other days when the pastoral team determines extra coverage is needed. Weekday coordination and preparation are handled by the Executive Assistant and Property Manager.

Supervision and Working Relationships

Supervisors: Pastoral Team — the Lead Pastor and the Pastor for Community Life jointly. Day-to-day pastoral point of contact for this role is the Pastor for Community Life.
Coordinates on Sabbath with: Support Team Lead (Frank Chiechi — handles tech and Sabbath school room setup), Minister of Worship & Arts (who runs the worship service), the elder-in-charge, and all volunteer leaders of the day.
Partners with weekday staff: Receives the Sabbath morning brief from the Executive Assistant on Friday; confirms any special arrangements (baptisms, baby dedications, visiting speakers) before arriving Sabbath morning.
Does not supervise: volunteer teams directly. Acts as the on-site point of coordination, not as a team supervisor. Volunteer teams are led by their team leads.

Core Responsibilities: Arrival and Opening (8:00 – 9:30 AM)

Arrive at 8:00 AM. Confirm that the building is open and that Support Team Lead has begun setup.
Walk the building — sanctuary, Sabbath school rooms, lobby, kitchen — and confirm everything on the Sabbath morning checklist is in place.
Confirm that the lobby is ready — announcement board current, tithe cards stocked, any handouts for the day staged.
Greet early-arriving volunteers (greeters, hospitality, Sabbath school leaders) and address any last-minute needs.
Serve as the main point of contact for trained security personnel; confirm coverage and brief them on any special arrangements for the day.
Confirm that the coffee bar is set and signage is in place.

Services and Sabbath School (9:30 AM – 1:30 PM)

Serve as the on-site point of contact for any issue that arises — visitor questions, room temperature, audio issues, late arrivals, pastoral care walk-ins.
Coordinate with the Support Team Lead on any tech issues during services and Sabbath school.
Maintain coordination with trained security personnel throughout the day; escalate concerns to the elder-in-charge or pastoral staff as appropriate.
Welcome and orient first-time guests; hand them off to a greeter or pastor as appropriate.
Handle transitions between first service, Sabbath school, and second service — ensuring rooms are reset, communications flow, and the service schedule stays on time.

Fellowship Meal and Afternoon (1:30 – 4:00 PM)

Coordinate with the Hospitality Coordinator (or the Hospitality volunteer team on non-meal weeks) to support fellowship meal flow.
Remain on site to address questions, help with clean-up coordination, and support any afternoon events or meetings.
Complete the Sabbath closing checklist: confirm spaces are clean, equipment is off and secured, and the building is ready to be closed by Support Team.

Documentation

Maintain a simple Sabbath log recording: attendance (with Executive Assistant's support), number of first-time guests, notable events or issues, and anything the Pastor for Community Life should know about on Tuesday.
Hand off any pastoral-care conversations appropriately to the Lead Pastor or Pastor for Community Life.

Skills and Qualifications

Strong interpersonal skills and a warm, welcoming presence.
Ability to stay calm and solve problems on the fly.
Organizational skills — able to track many moving parts across a 6–8 hour day.
Alignment with the mission and discipleship culture of Church of the Advent Hope.
Availability every Sabbath, with planned time off coordinated in advance with the Pastor for Community Life.

This role works every Sabbath. The default shift is 6 hours (8:00 AM – 2:00 PM). On particular Sabbaths — meal Sabbaths, baptism Sabbaths, board Sabbaths, special concerts or events, or other days where the pastoral team determines extra coverage is needed — the shift extends to 8 hours (8:00 AM – 4:00 PM). The pastoral team confirms extended-shift Sabbaths at least one week in advance whenever possible.

Planned absences require at least two weeks' advance notice and coordination with the pastoral team to ensure alternate coverage. No weekday hours are expected or compensated; any needed weekday time is coordinated separately with the pastoral team.

Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
