Full Job Description

The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County (LASPBC) is a nonprofit charitable law firm dedicated to ensuring equal access to the justice system for the low-income, disadvantaged and traditionally underserved residents of Palm Beach County and surrounding areas.

The Consumer Advocacy Paralegal plays an important role in advancing equal access to justice by helping vulnerable individuals resolve consumer-related legal issues that affect their financial stability and quality of life.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Consumer Advocacy Paralegal provides comprehensive legal and administrative support to attorneys representing individuals in consumer protection matters. Responsibilities include client intake, eligibility screening, case preparation, document drafting, referrals, administrative filings, litigation support, and maintaining accurate case records, ensuring high-quality legal services to the community, under the direction of the unit attorneys.

Work schedule is as follows: generally, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with occasional evening and/or weekend work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conducts client telephone calls, performs preliminary case screening, and assists with determining client needs for Consumer Advocacy Unit matters.
Completes client intake and prepares cases through investigation, document review, fact gathering, and efforts to achieve early resolution with adverse parties when appropriate.
Prepares matters for administrative filings, including investigating complaints, organizing supporting documentation, submitting required materials, and following up with administrative agencies.
Assists with litigation preparation, including drafting and organizing pleadings, correspondence, exhibits, discovery materials, and other case-related documents under attorney supervision.
E-files pleadings and other court documents with the appropriate clerk of court in accordance with applicable procedures and deadlines.
Maintains accurate and organized case files, updates the case management system, tracks deadlines, and performs related administrative duties necessary to support effective case handling.
Participates in trainings, presentations, consumer workshops, outreach events, and community programs to provide information and assistance to eligible clients and community members.
Prepares, orders, organizes, and distributes consumer education materials, including flyers, brochures, and other outreach resources for community organizations and events.
Attends staff meetings, case meetings, outreach events, and other community meetings as assigned.
Accurately records time spent on each client matter through the agency’s online case management system.
Stays informed about emerging issues, professional developments, and changes in consumer protection and related legal areas.
Maintains strict confidentiality of all client, case, and agency information.
Complies with all agency policies, procedures, ethical standards, and applicable legal requirements.
Works collaboratively with attorneys, paralegals, support staff, and community partners to promote a positive, professional, and supportive team environment.
Maintains regular and punctual attendance and meets all assigned responsibilities, performance expectations, deadlines, and work schedules.
Maintains courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with clients, employees, community partners, and representatives of outside agencies.
Assists the supervising attorney, Executive Director, or designee with special projects, assignments, and other duties as assigned or as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Associate’s Degree or higher; or Paralegal certificate or equivalent; Paralegal certification preferred.
One (1) year of experience in the legal field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in consumer advocacy, consumer protection, housing, public benefits, or related civil legal services matters preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Specialized or legal knowledge required to be able to provide legal support services, draft pleadings, understand court rules and procedures.
Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), electronic case management systems, and court filing systems.
Accurate spelling, punctuation, grammar, typing and e-mailing skills.
Good judgment, organization, and efficiency.
Capacity to learn and adapt.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Strong, positive interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and responsibly.

Personal Characteristics

Dependability, initiative, motivation, and concern for interest of clients.
High ethical standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must pass a background screening and internal conflict check.
Requires safely lifting or moving up to 25 lbs on an occasional basis, for example movement of materials, files or texts.
Regular requirement to stand, and sit for long periods of time, with some walking, occasional bending, stooping, squatting, pushing and pulling.
Noise level is usually quiet to moderate.

SALARY RANGE: $21.63 to $26.44 per hour depending on experience.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

Vacation leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks per year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment) and increases to 3 weeks per year after two years of employment.
Sick leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks per year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment).
13-15 paid holidays per year (depending on court schedule).

Employer paid short-term disability/long-term disability and life insurance (beginning first of the month after 30 days of employment).
