Design Engineer

Position Overview

Dependable Metal Products is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team. This is a hands-on engineering role that combines product design, reverse engineering, manufacturing support, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate is highly proficient in Autodesk Inventor, thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, and enjoys seeing designs come to life on the production floor.

This position is not a desk-only engineering role. You will spend time working directly with production personnel, troubleshooting designs, improving manufacturability, and ensuring products are built accurately and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Reverse engineer existing components and assemblies using physical parts and measurements.
Create accurate 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings in Autodesk Inventor.
Design new products and components from customer requirements, concepts, sketches, or written descriptions.
Develop production-ready designs with manufacturability, cost, and efficiency in mind.
Generate complete fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and related documentation.
Work closely with laser, forming, welding, machining, and assembly departments to ensure designs are executed correctly.
Provide engineering support to production by answering questions, resolving issues, and implementing design improvements.
Identify opportunities to simplify manufacturing processes, reduce costs, and improve product quality.
Maintain revision control and engineering documentation.
Collaborate with sales, project management, purchasing, and production throughout the design and manufacturing process.
Assist with prototype development, fit-up verification, testing, and product validation.
Ensure designs meet customer specifications, company standards, and applicable engineering practices.
Manage multiple engineering projects simultaneously while meeting aggressive deadlines.

Qualifications Required

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Inventor.
Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and manufacturing processes.
Experience creating fabrication drawings with proper GD&T, dimensions, and tolerances.
Ability to reverse engineer physical parts accurately.
Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Willingness to spend substantial time on the production floor supporting manufacturing.

Preferred

Experience in sheet metal fabrication.
Knowledge of laser cutting, CNC forming, welding, machining, and assembly processes.
Experience designing products for manufacturability (DFM).
Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and engineering change management.
Experience with prototype development and product testing.
