Full Job Description

Job Overview
Mental Health America of West Central Indiana is seeking a dedicated Prevention Specialist to play a vital role in promoting health, safety, and well-being within Putnam and Owen counties. In this energetic and impactful position, you will develop and implement prevention programs, provide education, and collaborate with diverse populations to reduce risks related to health and safety issues. Your proactive approach will empower individuals to make informed choices, fostering healthier lifestyles and safer environments.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Develop, implement, facilitate, and manage tobacco prevention and cessation programs in the desired community.
Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, schools, healthcare providers, and local stakeholders to promote program goals.
The coordinator will recruit and organize both individuals and organizational representatives from the community to form a coalition representing diverse interests and backgrounds.
The coordinator will lead the coalition to strategize action to reduce commercial tobacco use in the county through programs and policy.
Advocate for tobacco-free policies and assist in policy development at the local level.
Monitor and evaluate program outcomes, ensuring compliance with grant(s) and agency goals.
Represent the agency at public meetings, events, and advocacy efforts related to tobacco prevention.
Responsible for recruiting public schools to conduct the Youth Tobacco Survey and to assist in proctoring.
Responsible for developing media partnerships with local news venues and providing accurate local, state, national, and international information on tobacco control to the news media as necessary for the education of the public on tobacco news.
The coordinator will fully engage community and coalition members, including specific task force groups, in the business of commercial tobacco control. For this purpose, the coordinator is an excellent written and oral communicator. The coordinator will be able to work with healthcare providers, businesses, and other organizations to educate them about evidence-based commercial tobacco control practices, assist them with policy development and implementation, and collaborate with them to increase referral and acceptance rates to the Indiana Tobacco Quitline.
Submit periodic electronic reports as required and respond to local and state needs for information as directed.
The coordinator will commit to studying the CDC’s Best Practices models in commercial tobacco control. Coordination will use proven, evidence-based practices to reduce commercial tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke, and to prevent commercial tobacco use in the community.
The coordinator will monitor the completion of activities contracted in the written work plan submitted.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

: Ability to plan, implement, and oversee community-based prevention and cessation programs. Ability to track program outcomes, analyze data, and prepare reports to measure effectiveness. Able to assess community needs and develop strategies to address tobacco use. Must be able to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and prioritize work effectively.

: Strong networking and relationship-building skills to collaborate with organizations, schools, and healthcare providers. Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with diverse community members and stakeholders. Public speaking skills and understanding of public health and/or political science. Must be able to work independently. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, virtual presentation tools, etc.

: Bachelor’s degree in public health, social work, human services, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.

: Possession of a valid driver’s license, proof of auto liability insurance, and a safe driving record.

Supervisory Relationships

This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer

Travel

Travel is primarily within the targeted community. Travel is 50% of the time.

Pay: $19.23 - $22.11 per hour
