Full Job Description

General Position Overview:

The Art Therapist will facilitate art therapy sessions for older adults living with early-stage memory impairment within the Intergenerational Adult Daycare setting. This role is part of a one-year pilot program funded through a grant from the Alzheimer’s Association Center for Development and Innovation, ending on June 30th, 2027. Working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, the Art Therapist will implement group-based therapeutic interventions using art to support participants’ physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. The position requires a strong understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, along with advanced group facilitation, clinical, and communication skills.

Main Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to identify and enroll participants in art therapy groups
Conduct pre-and post-assessments to evaluate changes in mood and cognition
Develop personalized art therapy programming based on participants’ needs, goals, and preferences
Facilitate group art therapy sessions using various media (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpting, ceramics, clay)
Teach coping strategies to help participants manage emotional and psychological challenges
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of session observations
Participate in team consultations and maintain ongoing communication with the Program Director and MDT.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in art therapy or counseling with specialized coursework in Art Therapy required
Certification through the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) desired
Prior experience practicing as an Art Therapist
Strong knowledge of visual arts and therapeutic art interventions
Advanced clinical skills in both individual and group settings
Experience working with older adults, including knowledge of Alzheimer’s and dementia progression
Ability to design and deliver appropriate art therapy interventions for older adults
Demonstrated group facilitation experience
Excellent written, verbal, observational, and counseling skills
Cultural competence and sensitivity when working with diverse populations
Ability to maintain a supportive, non-judgmental environment and foster positive outcomes
Current CPR and First Aid certificate. Successful completion of background clearance.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with Canva or similar design tools preferred.

Working conditions: Working conditions are normal for the Adult Daycare environment. Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds and be able to help people with daily activities such as using the bathroom. Must be ok with cleaning up after people.

Pay: $125.00 per hour
