Full Job Description

TITLE: ART INSTRUCTOR - (PART-TIME 80% EMPLOYEE)

SUMMARY:

The Art Instructor works collaboratively across program groups to provide a culturally relevant and accessible educational program with a strong understanding of the principles of equity, inclusion and belonging in the discipline of visual arts. This is achieved by developing lesson plans, delivering instruction (individualized, small and whole group), evaluating students’ progress, effectively managing the classroom and participating in school-wide committees that support students’ broader understanding of the interconnectedness of visual arts across disciplines.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING):

Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment -

1. Assesses functional levels and makes informal assessments in order to accurately prescribe and plan learning experiences for the class and individual student.

2. Teaches concepts, skills and subject material requiring accommodations and accessibility in accordance with the student's needs and in accordance with the California Framework and the principles of Universal Design for Learning for first through twelfth grade students with special education needs.

3. Teaches applied and functional art skills to high school students during senior printshop class.

4. Promotes an inclusive and flexible learning environment conducive to meeting student academic and socio-emotional needs.

5. Evaluates students' academic growth by grading materials or in-class assignments in a fair and individualized way. Returns assignments to students in a timely manner.

6. Maintains pertinent records including daily lesson plans, attendance and quarterly grades.

Collaboration and Communication -

7. Effectively and accurately keeps the homeroom teacher apprised of student progress.

8. Collaborates and communicates professionally and effectively with the art elective Teaching Assistant and other school staff.

9. Communicates with students’ home adults in a professional and collaborative manner.

10. Assists in planning annual art events and preparing for other school events in collaboration with the Assistant Head of School and other school staff. Such as but not limited to: Latine Heritage, Black History, Diwali, Lunar New Year, and Dia De Los Murertos.

11. Coordinates rotating displays of art around campus showcasing student art and highlighting cultural relevance.

12. Collaborates with other teachers and instructors and the larger community to support integrated curricula principles within other disciplines. Such as, but not limited to, integrating art into the Ethnic Studies course and creating lessons during morning “Art Lab” time that compliment classroom curriculum and instruction.

13. Attends and participates in staff and in-service training meetings, student TEAM meetings, school special events and workshops as scheduled by school administration. Attends annual orientation and weekly mandatory team meetings. Participates in at least two school committees each school year.

Classroom Support, Management and Safety -

14. Works with the school administration team to implement positive behavioral and intervention programs as well as the implementation of the Frostig Success Attributes.

15. Maintains students’ behavioral standards in the classroom with a strong focus on social and emotional teaching and learning.

16. Plans and organizes a clean, safe, and welcoming indoor/outdoor classroom environment before each semester and maintains the classroom throughout the year.

17. Proficient or at least familiar with the ceramics process including hand building and wheel throwing and kiln operation, safety and maintenance.

Other Responsibilities -

18. Collaborates with the Assistant Head of School on the development of the annual art elective budget, procures and effectively and efficiently manages art supplies.

19. Maintains mandatory on-site hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with approximate daily hours of 6.40 hours per day unless authorized by the Assistant Head of School.

20. Responsible for implementing recommendations from the school administration team.

21. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS):

REQUIRED:

At least two to four years of teaching experience within the field of art to elementary, middle and/or high school aged students.
Academic coursework and/or demonstrated professional experience creating visual arts.
Must be great with school-aged students, especially those with special education needs and learning differences.
Must have the qualities of a patient, organized, flexible, independent thinker, energetic, and easy going instructor.

PREFERRED:

Bachelor’s Degree
Certificates or degrees in special education

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret documents such as professional journals, policies and procedure manuals.
Ability to speak and write clearly and articulately.
Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively in a team environment as well with students, parents, and other professionals within and outside The Frostig School.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Through working knowledge of the Google Suite.
Ability to effectively use the internet for research and communication.

The employee will be required to safely load and unload the kiln which requires stepping, reaching and lifting and a strong understanding of the operations of the kiln.
