Full Job Description

General:

The primary goal of this position is to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault through educational programming, and to engage in outreach endeavors in the community which ensure victims of intimate partner violence are aware of services available to them. The ideal candidate will be passionate about preventing intimate partner violence, capable of connecting with teens and young adults, and extremely proactive in developing ideas and initiatives focused on educational programming and victim outreach initiatives.

Key areas of responsibility:

YOUTH PREVENTION EDUCATION:

- Implement prevention education in both public and private middle and high schools across six counties. Requires strong public speaking and presentation skills, being able to communicate effectively with teens and young adults, and speaking candidly about difficult subjects.

o Communicate with school administrators to advocate for the benefits of the program.

o Coordinate scheduling curriculum

o Score pre- and post-tests to rate effectiveness of curriculum in obtaining learning objectives

-Supplemental programming will also be provided to college-aged students.

VICTIM OUTREACH:

- Participate in opportunities to share information about domestic violence, sexual assault, and agency services at events such as health fairs, community resource events, and others. Effective tabling requires someone who is outgoing, engaging, and can speak authentically about uncomfortable subjects.

- Speak to civic groups, churches, and other audiences to promote agency services, educate on risk factors and warning signs of intimate partner violence, and how to support a friend or family member who may be experiencing intimate partner violence.

AWARENESS MONTH RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Plan and implement activities for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October), Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (February) and Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April).

SOCIAL MEDIA AND OTHER MARKETING:

- In coordination with leadership, create social media content to communicate messaging about the prevention of intimate partner violence, the availability of services, and promote agency events and initiatives.

- Design and distribute printed materials such as brochures, posters, flyers, etc. to reach victims and promote the availability of agency services.

- Develop content for e-newsletters and agency website.

CRISIS HOTLINE COVERAGE:

- After receiving specialized training, employee will participate in the agency’s crisis line rotation. Shifts are overnight on weekdays from 5pm-9am and also on weekends and holidays. The average crisis line responsibilities are 2-3 weeknights per month and one weekend every other month. An on-call stipend is provided.

- Crisis hotline workers provide safety planning and assessment for individuals who have experienced domestic violence and/or sexual assault. Through the hotline, employees share information about services available, make referrals to other needed services, and provide crisis intervention.

- During scheduled shift, crisis hotline workers are also responsible for responding to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in the event of a sexual assault. Specialized training will be provided on sexual assault response. Albemarle Hopeline guarantees advocate response within one hour.

OTHER AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

- Attend relevant community meetings and serve as a liaison to community agencies on the subjects of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.

- Some travel to conferences and trainings may be required. Travel-related expenses for training are paid by the agency.

- Complete relevant reports for funders and client service documentation.

- Participate in staff meetings and trainings.

Education, Experience, and Other Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

- Bachelor’s degree in social work, gender studies, health, education, or related field strongly preferred.

- Knowledge of the dynamics, root causes, and preventive factors of intimate partner violence (domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking) is strongly valued, but training and education can be provided on these topics.

EXPERIENCE:

- A minimum of one year work experience in a professional environment is required, a higher level of experience is strongly preferred. Relevant experience might be in the fields of education, social work, human services, youth services, or another related field.

- Experience in public speaking and/or educational instruction is required.

- Experience working with youth is required. This does not necessarily have to have been in a formal or professional setting- volunteer experience will be considered.

- Event planning experience will be beneficial but is not required.

- Experience in graphic design, website design, and social media marketing, and other forms of outreach is preferred.

SKILLS AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

- Successful candidates will have a genuine passion for the prevention of intimate partner violence. Ideal candidates will also enjoy working with teens and young adults, and have a knack for connecting with youth.

- Exceptional oral communication skills are required related to public speaking and giving educational presentations.

- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality requirements related to victim services.

- Strong computer skills are necessary for success in this role, including experience developing slide presentations (PowerPoint, Canva, or other presentation software).

- Must hold a valid driver’s license, have reliable transportation, and be able to travel frequently throughout Hopeline’s six-county service area (mileage reimbursement required).

- Must be able to work independently, assume professional responsibility for planning and outcomes, and manage time efficiently.

- Requires strong organizational skills.

- Must have availability for evening and weekend events – agency does provide “flex time” when work outside of normal business hours is required.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary range: $45,000 - $50,000 per year based upon skills and experience

Additional compensation in the form of an on-call stipend is provided for crisis hotline coverage

Flex-time scheduling when evening or weekend events are required

Mileage reimbursement for all work-related travel

Paid time off: paid state holidays, paid sick leave, paid vacation, paid time for civic engagement within the community

Health plan – 100% of insurance premium is covered for full-time employees after 90 day eligibility period

Retirement – agency contributes 2% of employee’s gross compensation to IRA after 90 day eligibility

Short-Term Disability Insurance – paid by employer after one full year of employment

Optional supplemental dental and vision insurance
