Position Overview
This position involves driving to assigned areas, reading utility meters, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Candidates must be comfortable with frequent walking and repeatedly entering and exiting a vehicle throughout the day.
Essential Job Functions:
The following duties are not inclusive of all duties, and the incumbent performs other related duties, as required.
- The primary responsibility of this position is to read meters and record consumption of the water used accurately and efficiently, perform general maintenance of meter boxes which may include cleaning of meter boxes, and removal of vegetation impeding access to meters.
- Walks or drives a city vehicle to assigned neighborhoods and routes.
- Perform manual work taking readings of meter dials and entering the readings into a hand-held unit or laptop computer.
- Report to Lead Utility Specialist any problems such as damaged boxes or lids, obstruction to meter access, water in meter box, water leaks, spinning dials on register, any problems with dogs or other wildlife which prevents access to the meters.
- Complete re-read service orders to verify readings in cases where consumptions appear to be abnormal, and record possible reasons for fluctuations.
- Record and report any illegal usage to the Lead Utility Specialist.
- Follow all safety procedures, rules and regulations.
- Utilize all safety equipment.
- Work is performed primarily outdoors.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license.
- Clean driving record.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in all types of weather.
- Knowledge of safety practices/procedures in operating a City vehicle.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain a City vehicle.
- Ability to walk frequently and perform repetitive physical activity throughout the day.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education And Experience
- Graduation from high school or G.E. D.
- One year or more of experience working with the public.
- Possession of a valid State of Mississippi driver’s license at the time of appointment or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days, and a driving record acceptable to the City’s Risk Manager.
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skill and abilities will be accepted.
- Previous meter reading experience is a plus

Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 25+ pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting and kneeling to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are primarily outdoors.
This position requires working outdoors in residential and commercial areas. Employees may encounter uneven terrain, insects, spiders, snakes and other outdoor environmental conditions.
