Team Lead – Millwork Drafting

Location: Melville, NY (On-Site)

About the Role

Gilbert is seeking an experienced Team Lead – Millwork Drafting to provide technical leadership while remaining hands-on in the design and drafting of custom millwork projects. This is an ideal opportunity for a senior drafter who enjoys mentoring others, solving complex engineering challenges, and influencing drafting standards without moving into a full management role.

In this position, you will lead by example—owning your own portfolio of projects while serving as the technical resource for junior drafters and external drafting partners. You'll collaborate closely with Project Managers, Production, Engineering, and outsourced drafting firms to ensure every drawing package is accurate, manufacturable, and delivered on schedule.

Responsibilities

Produce detailed shop drawings, construction drawings, 2D and 3D CAD models, and CNC-ready part layouts for high-end custom millwork projects.
Interpret architectural drawings and design intent to create complete fabrication packages.
Serve as the technical lead for the drafting team, providing day-to-day coaching, training, and guidance to junior drafters.
Review drawing packages for accuracy, constructability, manufacturing feasibility, and company drafting standards.
Partner with outsourced drafting firms by assigning work, answering technical questions, reviewing deliverables, and ensuring quality expectations are met.
Collaborate with Project Managers, Production Supervisors, Estimators, and Engineering to resolve design and manufacturing challenges.
Develop innovative solutions for complex construction details, hardware integration, structural integrity, and fabrication methods.
Maintain and continuously improve Gilbert's CAD standards, drawing library, and detail catalog.
Create assembly drawings, joinery details, finish schedules, and installation documentation.
Produce CNC part drawings and optimize layouts for manufacturing efficiency.
Help establish drafting best practices, standard details, and process improvements that increase quality and efficiency.
Support continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and manufacturing.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Architecture, Industrial Design, or related field preferred.
7+ years of millwork drafting, cabinetry, fixture, or architectural woodworking experience.
Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD 2D and 3D.
Strong understanding of custom millwork construction methods, joinery, materials, hardware, and fabrication processes.
Experience creating CNC-ready manufacturing drawings.
Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and develop less experienced drafters.
Experience coordinating or reviewing work performed by outsourced drafting resources is highly desirable.
Excellent problem-solving and mechanical aptitude.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Pay: $51.15 - $58.21 per hour
