We are a licensed California cannabis cultivation company seeking an experienced Nursery Operations Manager & METRC Specialist to lead our nursery operations while ensuring complete compliance with California cannabis regulations.
This position is responsible for overseeing all nursery production, cloning, propagation, irrigation, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), inventory management, METRC compliance, and nursery staff. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the nursery consistently supplies healthy, production-ready plants to multiple cultivation rooms operating on staggered production cycles.
Key Responsibilities
Nursery Operations
- Manage all daily nursery operations from cloning through vegetative production.
- Oversee mother plant health, cloning, propagation, transplanting, and nursery workflow.
- Develop and manage nursery production schedules at least 60 days in advance to support multiple cultivation rooms operating on staggered production cycles.
- Forecast clone demand and maintain sufficient nursery inventory to ensure uninterrupted replanting across cultivation rooms with a combined production capacity exceeding 8,000 plants.
- Coordinate cultivar pairings based on growth rate, plant structure, stretch, nutrient requirements, and environmental compatibility to maximize room performance and production consistency.
- Coordinate closely with cultivation leadership to align nursery output with harvest schedules, room turnovers, and production goals.
- Monitor clone success rates and implement continuous improvements.
- Maintain nursery cleanliness, organization, and sanitation standards.
Team Leadership
- Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate nursery technicians.
- Assign daily work priorities and monitor productivity.
- Maintain high standards of quality, accountability, and teamwork.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations.
Irrigation, Plant Health, & Technology
- Strong knowledge of irrigation systems, fertigation, early-stage plant nutrition, plant physiology, and commercial nursery environmental management.
- Develop and manage irrigation schedules.
- Mix nutrients and oversee fertigation programs.
- Monitor plant health and environmental conditions.
- Identify and correct nutrient deficiencies, environmental stress, and growth issues.
- Recommend and implement corrective actions to optimize plant performance.
- Proficiency with cultivation technology and monitoring equipment, including TrolMaster, Bluelab pH and EC meters/controllers, irrigation and fertigation systems, environmental monitoring equipment, and other commercial cultivation tools.
- Ability to calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain cultivation equipment to ensure accurate environmental and irrigation performance.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
- Develop, implement, and oversee the nursery IPM program.
- Conduct routine scouting for pests, pathogens, and disease.
- Coordinate preventative and corrective treatments.
- Maintain detailed IPM documentation.
- Enforce sanitation protocols to minimize contamination risks.
METRC & Inventory Management
- Maintain complete nursery inventory accuracy within METRC.
- Tag plants and ensure accurate lifecycle tracking.
- Manage inventory adjustments, plant movements, waste events, and transfers.
- Prepare and execute METRC transfers.
- Perform routine inventory reconciliations and audits.
- Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies.
- Ensure compliance with all METRC reporting requirements.
Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure compliance with all California cannabis regulations and company SOPs.
- Maintain accurate production, inventory, and compliance records.
- Prepare documentation for inspections and internal audits.
- Identify opportunities to improve nursery workflows, production efficiency, inventory accuracy, and operational performance.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of commercial cannabis nursery and propagation experience.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on METRC experience, including plant tagging, inventory management, audits, and transfers.
- Proven experience managing high-volume cloning and propagation programs.
- Experience maintaining mother plants and nursery production schedules.
- Strong knowledge of irrigation systems, fertigation, early-stage plant nutrition, and plant physiology.
- Extensive experience implementing and managing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.
- Experience supervising and developing nursery staff.
- Strong understanding of California cannabis regulations related to nursery operations and inventory compliance.
- Exceptional organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Experience with cannabis ERP systems such as Distru is preferred.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, including Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, and Shared Drives for documentation, production planning, inventory tracking, and reporting.
- Proficiency with Slack for daily communication, team collaboration, operational updates, and task coordination.
- Ability to maintain accurate digital records, complete required documentation, and communicate effectively using company software and collaboration platforms.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in a commercial cultivation environment.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing nursery production for multiple cultivation rooms.
- Experience preparing for regulatory inspections and inventory audits.
- Experience improving SOPs and operational workflows.
- Familiarity with environmental control systems and irrigation automation.
Work Schedule & Position Expectations
This is a full-time, exempt management position. The primary work schedule is during normal business hours; however, the successful candidate is expected to provide occasional remote operational support outside of scheduled hours when necessary to address urgent issues, coordinate nursery activities, respond to time-sensitive communications, and support the cultivation team. This support may be provided through Slack, phone, email, or other company designated communication platforms.
