Rugged Mountain Custom RV is looking for a hands-on CAD & Manufacturing Designer to develop and maintain the CAD documentation for our complete line of truck campers.
This is much more than a traditional drafting position. The successful candidate will spend significant time on the production floor, working directly with our builders, taking measurements from actual campers, understanding how they are constructed, and translating that information into accurate 3D models, drawings, and CNC files.
We need someone who can take a physical camper or component, figure out exactly how it was built, measure it accurately, model it in Autodesk Fusion 360, and create drawings that production can actually build from.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain complete Fusion 360 models for all Rugged Mountain camper models.
- Develop detailed production drawings for:
- Structural components
- Framing
- Floors, walls and roofs
- Cabinets and interior components
- Plumbing
- Electrical
- Solar and battery systems
- Heating and HVAC
- Exterior components
- Mounting systems
- Other camper systems and components
- Reverse-engineer existing components and assemblies by taking accurate measurements directly from completed campers.
- Work directly with production employees to understand how components are built and assembled.
- Create accurate, dimensioned manufacturing drawings.
- Create and maintain assembly drawings and Bills of Materials.
- Create CNC-ready files and CNC programs for our CNC router.
- Make design changes based on production feedback.
- Improve existing designs for manufacturability, fit, assembly, and serviceability.
- Maintain organized CAD files and drawing revisions.
- Help establish standardized CAD and drawing practices throughout the company.
- Develop complete digital documentation for each camper model.
Required Skills
- Strong proficiency in Autodesk Fusion 360 is required.
- Excellent 3D modeling skills.
- Ability to create professional 2D manufacturing drawings.
- Ability to accurately measure physical parts and recreate them in CAD.
- Experience with CNC routers and creating CNC programs.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes.
- Ability to read and understand technical drawings.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and solve problems.
- Comfortable working with tools and spending significant time on the manufacturing floor.
Experience That Would Be a Plus
Experience with any of the following would be valuable:
- RV or camper manufacturing
- CNC routing
- Woodworking and cabinetry
- Composite construction
- Sheet metal fabrication
- Electrical systems
- 12V/120V electrical systems
- Solar and battery systems
- Plumbing
- HVAC/heating
- Product development
- Reverse engineering
- Manufacturing documentation
The Right Person
We’re looking for someone who likes making things.
You should be equally comfortable sitting at a computer in Fusion 360 and walking onto the production floor with a tape measure.
If something doesn’t fit, you should want to figure out why.
If a builder says, “This part needs to change,” you should be comfortable looking at the actual camper, taking measurements, understanding the problem, making the change in Fusion 360, and producing an updated drawing.
This is a hands-on manufacturing position, not a desk-only drafting job.
The goal is to build a complete and accurate digital library of our campers so that our production team has reliable drawings, models, BOMs, and CNC files for every component.
