Full Job Description

Job Summary

The Billing Specialist is responsible for the accurate, timely, and compliant submission and management of claims for behavioral health and mental health services provided by the agency. This position supports the agency's revenue cycle by ensuring services are properly billed, payments are accurately posted and reconciled, denied or rejected claims are promptly addressed, and outstanding accounts receivable are actively monitored.

The Billing Specialist must maintain working knowledge of North Carolina Medicaid requirements, applicable Managed Care Organization (MCO) requirements, commercial insurance requirements, Medicare requirements when applicable, and agency billing procedures.

The Billing Specialist works collaboratively with clinical, administrative, credentialing, authorization, and quality management staff to identify and resolve issues that may prevent accurate and timely reimbursement.

Duties

Prepare, review, and submit claims to NC Medicaid, Managed Care Organizations (MCOs), commercial insurance carriers, and other applicable payers.
Verify client eligibility, insurance coverage, service authorizations, provider enrollment, and required billing information prior to claim submission.
Review claims for accurate service codes, modifiers, units, dates of service, diagnosis codes, and rendering provider information.
Monitor submitted claims and promptly correct rejected, denied, or unpaid claims.
Review EOBs and ERAs and accurately post payments, adjustments, denials, and recoupments.
Monitor accounts receivable and follow up on outstanding claims within payer timely filing and appeal requirements.
Identify billing-related documentation deficiencies and communicate needed corrections to the appropriate clinical, supervisory, or administrative staff.
Maintain accurate records of claims, payments, denials, corrections, authorizations, and payer communications.
Assist with billing audits, payer reviews, Plans of Correction, and other compliance activities.
Identify and report recurring billing, authorization, credentialing, or documentation concerns to management.
Maintain current knowledge of NC Medicaid, NCTracks, applicable MCO/Tailored Plan, and insurance billing requirements.
Protect client confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2 when applicable, agency policies, and applicable billing requirements.
Immediately report suspected billing errors, overpayments, fraud, waste, or abuse.
Complete billing reports and other assigned administrative duties within established timeframes.

Experience

A minimum of one year of behavioral health billing experience is preferred.

Experience with North Carolina Medicaid, NCTracks, Medicaid Managed Care, Tailored Plans/LME-MCOs, behavioral health billing, or similar payer systems is strongly preferred.
