Language Resource Center (LRC) is seeking qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters to provide professional interpreting services for medical and educational assignments throughout South Carolina.

Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language and English
- Professional ASL-English interpreting experience
- Current, recognized interpreting certification or credential appropriate for the assignment
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow professional interpreting standards and ethical guidelines
- Reliable transportation for in-person assignments
- Ability to arrive on time and prepared for assignments
- Must maintain all certifications, licenses, clearances, and credentials required by the applicable state, facility, school district, or client
- Successful completion of any required background checks or facility-specific onboarding requirements
Medical Interpreting – Preferred Qualifications
For medical assignments, candidates with the following are strongly preferred:
- Current RID National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or another nationally recognized ASL interpreting credential
- Prior medical or healthcare interpreting experience
- Experience interpreting in hospitals, medical centers, physician offices, specialty clinics, emergency departments, outpatient settings, or other healthcare environments
- Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare procedures
- Experience interpreting sensitive, complex, or confidential medical information
- Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries while providing accurate and impartial communication
Educational Interpreting – South Carolina Requirements
For assignments involving South Carolina K–12 schools, interpreters must meet the applicable South Carolina Department of Education requirements.
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, South Carolina requires educational interpreters to provide documentation of current national certification or an EIPA performance rating of 3.5 or higher. Educational interpreters must also have:
- A high school diploma
- Successful completion of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Written Test (EIPA: WT)
- A sworn statement acknowledging and agreeing to follow the National Association of Interpreters in Education Code of Ethics
- Required background check
- Required continuing education, including 80 hours every four years beginning with the 2026–2027 school year
Additional requirements will increase in subsequent school years, including higher EIPA score and educational requirements.
Educational Experience Preferred
Candidates with experience in the following settings are especially encouraged to apply:
- Elementary, middle, or high schools
- Special education
- IEP meetings
- Classroom instruction
- Student assessments
- Parent/teacher conferences
- Educational meetings and extracurricular activities
Experience working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and familiarity with educational terminology and environments is strongly preferred.

LRC interpreters are expected to:
- Provide accurate, complete, and impartial interpretation
- Maintain confidentiality
- Follow applicable professional codes of ethics
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries
- Follow all client, facility, and school policies
- Dress professionally and appropriately for the assignment setting
- Arrive on time and remain available for the duration of the assignment
- Maintain all required credentials and documentation
