Job Title: Application Engineer – Mechanical (Data Center Cooling)
Location: Remote (U.S.)
Department: Data Centers – Americas
Reports To: Director of Applications Engineering
About the Role
We are seeking a Mechanical Application Engineer to support data center cooling solutions during the commercial and pre-sales phase of projects. This role sits within the Technical Sales Support (TSS) organization and serves as the bridge between Sales and Engineering.
You will translate customer requirements into technically sound, cost-effective, and manufacturable cooling solutions for hyperscale and colocation data centers. This is a fast-paced, front-end engineering role focused on RFP support, equipment selection, and preliminary mechanical design.
Role Overview
The Application Engineer – Mechanical is responsible for the application, sizing, and preliminary design of data center cooling equipment during early project phases. Designs are typically developed to ~80% completion before being handed off to Engineering for final design and manufacturing release.
This role requires strong technical judgment, responsiveness, and a deep understanding of data center thermal and airflow management.
Key ResponsibilitiesFront-End Application & Design
- Apply and configure data center cooling equipment including CRAHs/CRACs, fan walls, CDUs, chillers, and hybrid air/liquid solutions
- Perform equipment sizing, heat load analysis, airflow evaluation, and performance calculations
- Develop preliminary mechanical designs optimized for cost, efficiency, footprint, and manufacturability
- Prepare technical selections, calculations, and submittal documentation for RFPs and proposals
Commercial & Technical Support
- Partner with business development and sales teams to translate customer specifications into competitive technical solutions
- Support technical discussions with customers, consulting engineers, and internal stakeholders
- Provide rapid-turn engineering input for pricing, feasibility, and configuration decisions
- Ensure proposed solutions align with product standards and engineering best practices
- Generate equipment submittals and support customer technical approval processes
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Transition designs from commercial application to manufacturing-ready configurations in collaboration with Engineering
- Coordinate with Sourcing and Operations on component availability, cost targets, and manufacturability
- Support smooth handoff from sales to project execution through documentation and technical clarification
Continuous Improvement
- Develop standardized selections, tools, and templates to accelerate quoting cycles
- Capture lessons learned from executed projects to improve future designs
- Stay current on ASHRAE standards, industry trends, and emerging data center cooling technologies
What We’re Looking For
- Strong applications engineering mindset with practical mechanical systems knowledge
- Understanding of data center thermal management, airflow, redundancy, and system integration
- Experience with CFD concepts such as hot aisle containment and flooded hall designs
- Ability to balance performance, cost, lead time, and production realities
- Comfortable managing multiple opportunities in a fast-paced environment
- Strong technical communication skills with customers and internal teams
- Collaborative team player across Sales, Engineering, Product, and Operations
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 3–7 years of experience in applications engineering, HVAC design, or data center cooling
- Working knowledge of ASHRAE TC 9.9, psychrometrics, fluid dynamics, and HVAC performance
- Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, or similar design tools
- Familiarity with engineered-to-order or configurable product environments
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Why Join Us
This is an opportunity to join a high-growth, technically driven organization working at the forefront of data center cooling innovation. You’ll help shape solutions that power mission-critical digital infrastructure, with the chance to see your designs move quickly from concept to reality.
