Community Development & Events Coordinator

City of Spring Valley – Spring Valley, Illinois
Full-Time or Part-Time | Municipal Government

The City of Spring Valley is seeking an organized, motivated, creative, and community-focused individual to serve as our Community Development & Events Coordinator.

This is a diverse, hands-on position for someone who enjoys working with people, organizing projects and events, communicating with the public, and helping make a positive impact in the community.

The Community Development & Events Coordinator will work closely with the Mayor, City departments, local businesses, community organizations, and residents. Responsibilities include supporting City projects, promoting economic development, managing communications and social media, coordinating City and Community Center events, and assisting with the operation and programming of the Spring Valley Community Center.

Key ResponsibilitiesMayor's Office & City Projects

Provide administrative and project support to the Mayor.
Assist with correspondence, reports, presentations, meetings, public notices, and community communications.
Research City projects, grants, programs, funding opportunities, and community needs.
Track projects, deadlines, and follow-up items.
Handle sensitive City information professionally and confidentially.

Public Relations, Social Media & Website

Create and publish content for the City's social media accounts.
Prepare press releases, public notices, newsletters, flyers, graphics, and community announcements.
Promote City programs, accomplishments, meetings, events, Community Center activities, and local businesses.
Keep the City website current with meeting information, events, notices, forms, department updates, and community resources.
Assist with timely public communication during emergencies, service interruptions, and other important situations.
Help respond professionally to questions and comments from the public.

Economic & Community Development

Assist with business attraction, retention, expansion, and downtown revitalization efforts.
Serve as a resource for existing and prospective Spring Valley businesses.
Help promote available commercial properties, development opportunities, incentives, and community resources.
Research grants, economic development programs, funding opportunities, and potential partnerships.
Communicate with business owners, developers, property owners, and regional organizations.
Help promote Spring Valley as a great place to live, work, visit, and do business.
Attend Zoning Board and Planning Commission meetings and provide updates to the Mayor and City Council.

Spring Valley Community Center

Assist with overseeing the daily operation and use of the Community Center.
Coordinate room reservations, rentals, programs, classes, and activities.
Maintain an organized facility and event schedule.
Communicate with renters, instructors, vendors, community organizations, and program participants.
Help establish and enforce Community Center policies and procedures.
Develop and promote new programs, activities, classes, and community partnerships.
Assist with maintenance, safety, supply, and facility needs.
Help ensure the Community Center remains welcoming, clean, organized, and properly used.
Provide supervision and direction as needed.

City & Community Events

Plan, promote, and assist with City-sponsored and Community Center events, including community traditions such as:

Elves Night Out activities
Lighted Christmas Parade
Mini Park activities associated with the Lighted Christmas Parade
Summer Fest in coordination with the Park Board
Fall Fest in coordination with the Park Board
Additional City and Community Center programs and special events throughout the year

Event responsibilities may include coordinating vendors, volunteers, entertainment, sponsorships, equipment, schedules, signage, promotion, setup, registration, guest services, troubleshooting, and cleanup.

Some evening and weekend availability will be required for meetings and special events.

Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Friendly, professional, and comfortable working with the public.
A strong written and verbal communicator.
Creative and comfortable developing social media content, flyers, and promotional materials.
Comfortable using social media platforms and performing basic website updates.
Proficient with Microsoft Office or comparable software.
Able to work independently while also collaborating with City employees and community partners.
Comfortable coordinating events, programs, meetings, and facility schedules.
Able to exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality.
Comfortable supervising and providing direction to others.
Interested in community development and helping Spring Valley continue to grow and improve.

Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Associate or bachelor's degree in public administration, communications, marketing, business, economic development, event planning, or a related field is preferred.
Experience in municipal government, public relations, office administration, social media, economic development, facility management, marketing, or event coordination is preferred.
Relevant professional and community experience may be considered in place of formal education.

Schedule

This position may be full-time or part-time, depending on the needs of the City and the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Regular office hours will be required, along with occasional evening and weekend hours for City meetings, Community Center activities, and special events.
