Lifeguard Job Description
Position Title: Morning/Day Lifeguard
Immediate Supervisor: Aquatics Director
Department: Aquatics
FLSA Status: Part-Time/Non-Exempt
The Illinois Valley YMCA is currently seeking individuals for lifeguards for morning and day time lifeguards. Prior experience or certification is recommended but not required. If hired, lifeguard training and certification will be offered at no cost to those who do not hold a current lifeguard certification.
Position Summary
Maintains safe swimming conditions in, on or around the pool deck and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with all Illinois Valley YMCA policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 15 years of age.
- Ability to maintain certification level of physical and mental readiness.
Additional Requirements
- American Red Cross and/or YMCA Lifeguarding certificate
- American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid
- American Red Cross Oxygen Administration.
- American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens.
Essential Functions
- Prepared and on-time for scheduled shifts.
- Attends all staff meetings, in-services & trainings as required by supervisor.
- Able to identify and adapt to the pool environment to prevent possible safety hazards.
- Able to be proactive and use preventative lifeguarding techniques to stop pending accidents or emergencies.
- Appropriately dressed (swim trunks or suit and guard shirt) & rescue ready (wearing rescue tube & whistle) at all times during shift.
- Effectively communicate rules and policies to members in a firm and fair way.
- Have the ability to always build positive relationships with members, participants and all other staff.
- Able to demonstrate the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
- Follow all current YMCA facility rules and regulations.
Physical / Mental Requirements
- Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear and obstructed vision.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water.
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
- Ability to make sound judgments.
- Ability to adapt to all situations and have and openness to change.
- Must be able to remain alert.
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.

General Job Segments
- Interpret and enforce pool rules and policies to ensure safety of all participants and swimmers.
- Execute emergency procedures as needed.
- Upon arriving, checks for and reports any hazardous or maintenance issues to a supervisor.
- Lock and secure all pool doors when pool is closed.
- Perform all duties with caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- All other duties assigned.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
