Job Summary:

The State of Arizona Research Library, a branch of the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records, has a leadership opening for the role of Research Library Assistant Administrator with a specialty in Law Librarianship. Through supervising and mentoring staff, leading our general and law reference services and outreach efforts, and measuring our impact through analytics and other methods, the Assistant Administrator will be integral to fulfilling our goal of “Preserving Arizona, Providing Access.” This position works closely with the Research Library Administrator to lead an exceptional team of professionals and paraprofessional staff tasked with "Preserving Arizona, Providing Access" through the stewardship of current and historically significant physical collections (Arizona Collection, Arizona Newspapers, Federal and State Documents, Law, Maps, and Patent and Trademark Resources) and digital collections (Arizona Memory Project, Reading Arizona). The Assistant Administrators area of impact will include:

Leadership

Supervise and mentor up to 3 - 4 professional and paraprofessional staff.
Work closely with and serve as back up to the Research Library Administrator.
Work collaboratively with all divisions within the Arizona Department of State, particularly with the Archives staff and the other Library Services branches.

Reference Services

Provide oversight of and participate in our team's reference activities.
Serve as the subject matter expert on Arizona law and answer law-related reference and research questions from state employees, researchers, and the public.
Oversee reading room rotation schedules for library staff and provide training and support to desk associates and reference librarians.
Understand and refine/reinforce policies and procedures.
Collect analytics.
Manage a grant-funded budget that supports reference services.

Outreach

Coordinate and lead local programming, tours, and outreach efforts to state agencies (including the legislature and the courts), genealogical societies, libraries, other organizations, and the public.
Provide instruction in Arizona legal research and in the use of common legal research resources.
Lead and/or participate in special statewide or national projects, such as Arizona Genealogy Day and the Law4AZ program.
Support social media outreach activities by submitting content (posts, blogs, videos).

Job Duties:

Serve as backup and support the Administrator as needed and work collaboratively with all divisions of Arizona Department of State.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge:

Commercial databases; and library products and practices (e.g. library automation software, library cataloging and classification systems, Westlaw, etc.)
LibAnswers, LibCal, LibGuides.
Arizona history and government, as well as current events
Arizona Revised Statutes, Arizona Administrative Code, legal reference resources and strategies
Planning strategies and tools, as well as budgeting-Analytics using GA4 and other sources

Skills:

Strong customer service and general/legal reference skills
Strong personnel skills to mentor staff, team build and negotiate conflicts
Strong computer skills including Windows, Word and Excel-Skill to operate library and office equipment, including microfilm readers, copiers, scanners

Abilities:

Excellent written and oral communication abilities
Ability to work with staff at all levels
Ability to undertake a complex, extended project and see it to fruition
Excellent attention to detail

Selective Preference(s):

MA in Library Science or related degree
Valid Arizona Driver's License

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Legal Reference training
Strong interest in state government and Arizona history
Experience managing personnel and projects
This position requires you to have an updated fingerprint card on file.
